Controlling force in industrial applications—whether for pressing, forming, or gripping materials—is far from simple. The key to effective force control lies in understanding measurement methods, system compliance, and realistic control expectations. Here are some insights for controlling force and managing expectations: Choosing the Right Force Measurement Method: ??Load cells offer high accuracy, but placement matters—mounting near the piston rod can cause damage, while placement on the cap end can affect force readings. ??Pressure sensors provide an alternative by measuring cap and rod pressure, but friction and turbulence can impact accuracy. Compliance Makes Force Control Easier: ??Newton’s Third Law applies—force control is easier when the material being compressed has some "give" (compliance). ??Pressing against hard materials causes rapid force spikes, making control much more difficult. Managing Unrealistic Expectations: ??Servo valves don’t respond instantly—even if they did, pressure waves travel with delay. ??If force transients are too fast, no control system will react in time to prevent force spikes. ??The best strategy? Reduce impact speed or add compliance to the tooling or workpiece. Matching Kinetic Energy to Required Work: ??The speed of impact is a critical factor—too slow, and the press stalls; too fast, and pressure spikes can damage the material or die. ??Presses should use cushioning mechanisms or motion control synchronization to absorb excess energy efficiently. Fine-Tuning Force Control for Precision: ??Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control can help stabilize force, but improper tuning can cause unwanted motion. ??Automatic adjustments are necessary as presses heat up and dimensions shift, affecting peak force accuracy.
