Women - especially those from Indigenous communities - have long been at the forefront of environmental conservation. ? Women are the "backbone of resilience," being among catastrophes' first responders and leading disaster recovery efforts. ? Women have been influential in convincing legislators around the world to ratify environmental treaties and adopt stricter climate policies. ? For the end of #InvasiveSpeciesWeek, we present you with this free resource you can use: Delta Institute's "Tree Species Selection Guide for Northwest Indiana and Comparable Climates." We developed this resource in partnership with Davey Resource Group, Inc. - and it includes a list of prohibited tree species at the end of the PDF. Check it out ?? ?? https://lnkd.in/gvjXzYhc #invasivespecies #urbanforestry

Ever wonder what these squiggly lines come from in tree bark? They just might have come from today's #InvasiveSpeciesWeek bug: the emerald ash borer. The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) can commonly be found throughout the Midwest, Great Lakes region, and Eastern states, causing havoc on ash trees. Many of our partner communities in Indiana and Michigan, where Delta has a long history of tree planting initiatives, have been dealing with these little creatures for many years. Want to learn more? Here's a few good articles on the insect from the US Forest Service: https://lnkd.in/gYxMyNs7 #emeraldashborer #emeraldash #invasivespecies

#InvasiveSpeciesWeek continues with today's contender: Buckthorn. Originally native to many parts of Europe and beyond, many species of buckthorn have become adept at growing in places throughout the United States - especially in Wisconsin and Minnesota, where the state governments have also classified buckthorn as an invasive species. It competes with native plants for nutrients, lights, and moisture, contributes to soil erosion and degrades soil quality. It can also serve as a host to pests. Our work in urban forestry and land management prioritizes native species. More info here: https://lnkd.in/eekiFuy7 #buckthorn #invasivespecies #midwest #greatlakes

Did someone say it was #InvasiveSpeciesWeek?? ?? We asked our staff what are the species that most impacts our work in the Midwest. One is the notorious phragmites australis, aka the common reed. These can be particularly harmful around the Great Lakes, as they have a natural ability to crowd out native wetland species, which threatens wetlands' ability to clean water, reduce flooding, and attract fish & wildlife biodiversity. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gq_-Revi #phragmites #greatlakes #biodiversity #invasivespecies

For those interested in Delta's recent RFP seeking consultants to develop an Urban Forestry Management Plan and Tree Inventory, please note that we have paused the RFP process due to the federal pause on Inflation Reduction Act funding and until we receive clarity from federal agencies about any changes in this program of work. When we receive instructions on clear next steps, we will reach back out to the RFP applicant pool and re-open the RFP with a new timeline. We appreciate your interest in this project and hope that this pause will be short-lived. https://lnkd.in/gEU5uxF2
