This North Carolina Health News article highlights a powerful story—one that reinforces the critical need for greater awareness of autoimmune disorders and their oral manifestations as early indicators of disease. Too often, oral symptoms are the first or only warning sign of an underlying autoimmune condition, yet they are frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed. Delays in assessment and diagnosis can mean missed opportunities for timely intervention, affecting treatment success and long-term health. As a mentor for the NORTH CAROLINA ALBERT SCHWEITZER FELLOWSHIP INC Fellows, I am proud to support students working to bridge these gaps in care. A special shout-out to Emma Myers, 4th year medical student at UNC School of Medicine and her Fellowship partner, Rashmi Deshmukh, 4th year dental student at UNC Adams School of Dentistry for creating OASIS — Oral Autoimmune Support and Intervention Squad. We need to enhance education for both medical and dental providers and develop more efficient testing and assessment protocols when oral symptoms point to a possible autoimmune disorder.
