You hire the best people and you pay them the best salary because they’re the best. ?? You do this so you don’t have to "babysit" them. Sound familiar? Leaders are responsible for getting results by supporting and leading others. ?? But is your personal leadership style, or your company’s entire leadership system, reliant on having good employees BECAUSE of your leadership or IN SPITE OF your leadership? The difference is critical, and can make or break your sustainable impact as a leader, not to mention your company's turnover and employee burnout. ?? #burnout #turnover

It is important to push folks away from blaming people and focus on setting people up for success. But there is a point of extension needed. There is a lot of valid talk about “fixing the system and NOT the people”, with approaches like HOP and other New View philosophies, centered on the notion that performance, good and bad, is the result of the system in which folks work and you’re not to blame the person. This is the foundation of behavior analysis as well and has been for nearly a century. However, the idea that “fixing the system and NOT the people” can sometimes be misinterpreted as avoiding understanding human error, which is inevitable but explainable. It also includes seeking to understand what’s working, and what’s not, in terms of the behavior of others and ensuring there are positive consequences occurring frequently on the job to shape and maintain those behaviors. “Fixing” people doesn’t mean a hyper-focus on the system and ignoring leaders reinforcing desired behaviors and improving undesired behaviors. Addressing performance deficits and helping people is a good thing. Leadership philosophies that ignore the ongoing support, shaping, and maintenance of behavior mean well (don’t blame the individual), but the unintended consequence can be to address every issue by fixing a part of the system, which might not be broken, instead of realizing that people (and their behavior) requirement ongoing support and reinforcement.
