National Poetry Month is coming up in April — are you looking for a poetry program for your organization? Consider our Speakers Program "Freedom Poems: Conversation with a Poet" presented by Dr. Sidney Jacobs. In this program, Dr. Sidney Jacobs—veteran, sociologist, professor, and poet—performs two of his poems from his upcoming book Freedom Poems: “Harriet” and “Where’s the Unum?”. Last month, Delaware Humanities Speaker Nancy Lynch brought her program "Vietnam Mailbag" to Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington. During her program, Nancy discussed and read selected war letters written by American troops stationed in Vietnam from her book "Vietnam Mailbag, Voices from the War: 1968-1972" which sheds light on the enduring legacy that war letters, photographs, and memorabilia can have on future generations. Nancy also regularly presents "The REAL Women: Veterans of Vietnam" a presentation that highlights correspondence she received from female veterans during the Vietnam War. Nancy is one of several women who provide public talks and classroom presentations to the Delaware community through our Speakers Program. Yesterday we had the pleasure of meeting with our legislators for a day of advocacy at Humanities on the Hill! Thank you to the offices of Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester and Senator Chris Coons for meeting with us to discuss the humanities work that we do in Delaware and the impact of the humanities in our state. After a full day of meetings, we capped off the day with a Congressional Reception and a visit from Representative Dina Titus. Hearing testimonies about the impact of the humanities during the reception from a veteran poet, a social studies teacher, and Rep. Titus was truly inspiring. Thank you to the Federation of State Humanities Councils for having us and fostering the opportunity to have these important conversations with our Congress members. #humanitiesonthehill
