Data shows that when Black patients are treated by Black doctors, they get more frequent medical care, more preventative medical care, and have better health outcomes – which is why it’s so important that we continue to diversify the medical field. At the National Medical Association Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly today, Mike Bloomberg spoke about Bloomberg Philanthropies’ $600 million gift so that Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Howard University College of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, and Morehouse School of Medicine can further advance their mission of training the next generation of doctors. Bloomberg Philanthropies will also provide seed funding to help establish the Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine, a new HBCU medical school being developed in New Orleans. https://lnkd.in/exmewNNX?

We are so excited to announce that Delaware Health Equity Coalition Inc. has been designated as a National Health Service Corps healthcare provider! This designation will assist us in our pursuit to advance health equity in the city of Wilmington and beyond!

I'm sharing our most recent paper published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, co-authored with Yuchen Zhang, Shannon Lynch, Jennifer Rowland, and Frank Curriero. We identified new breast cancer hotspots in the catchment area for the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute at ChristianaCare in New Castle County, Delaware. Specifically, we looked at hotspots for women diagnosed with breast cancer before age 50 and at an advanced stage. The incidence of breast cancer among younger women has been increasing and the USPSTF recently issued an updated draft recommendation to initiate screening at age 40. In addition, Delaware leads the US in late-stage breast cancer among women under age 50. By identifying communities where we see higher rates of advanced breast cancer among younger women, we can focus our efforts on improving early detection where it is needed most.
