Sussex County Health Coalition was proud to celebrate National Community Health Worker (CHW) Awareness Week, an annual observance dedicated to recognizing the vital role of CHWs.??Sussex County Health Coalition acknowledges the dedication, compassion, and impact that CHWs have on the health and well-being of our communities.?Peggy Geisler, Executive Director shared that “creating a quality Health Workforce, one that supports and empowers all our citizens, is critical.?Since many of our residents may have barriers to understanding the growing complexity of the healthcare system, including labs reports, diagnosis, health insurance and even prescriptions, it is important they have support. Barriers like a patient’s literacy level, digital access and even language barriers can foster poor health outcomes.??Having trained advocates is critical toward positive patient health while reducing the cost of services to the consumer and the state.” We encourage everyone to join us in recognizing and thanking CHWs for their exceptional service and dedication to our communities. ?? Meet Aashia Williams, a CHW in Sussex County. Aashia's journey from homelessness and mental health struggles to becoming a CHW is a testament to her resilience and dedication. After overcoming many challenges, including homelessness, Aashia was encouraged to pursue CHW training. With support from the Sussex County Health Coalition and the HRSA grant, she completed her training and is now helping others in the same homeless village where she once lived. Aashia is also set to earn a certification as a Health Literacy Specialist. Her story embodies strength and hope, and she's proud to honor her late mother's legacy through her impactful work.
