This Thursday, I will be speaking on a panel at the University of Loyola in response to the question: "Has the economy outgrown the planet?" The panel, hosted by the Political Science department, promises an accessible introduction to Degrowth as it approaches questions about the social and environmental implications of growth-oriented economic activity. Registration is open to the public and the link is available on the event page, copied below.

2024 has been a very fruitful and rich year for the Degrowth movement, marked by vibrant conferences and festivals that have sparked creativity and collaboration! The highlight was the Conferencia Internacional ESEE-Decrecemento 2024 Pontevedra in June, the 10th International gathering, a joint conference with the European Society for Ecological Economics . With over 1,100 attendees across 220 sessions, and numerous artistic and cultural activities, this event was a testament to the growth and respect Degrowth has garnered in the scientific community. We also held the second Assembly of the International Degrowth Network, bringing together passionate advocates eager to engage and support our shared vision. This year also saw gatherings across Europe—from Copenhagen to Paris, Vienne to Lisbon, Roma to Dublin—fostering connections and dialogue around social and environmental justice, also in Parliaments. With plans for more regional and thematical events in 2025, we are all waiting for you at Oslo in June (https://lnkd.in/dpiYiU6X). As we look ahead, it's clear that Degrowth is more essential than ever. Together, we can explore new pathways and formats for engagement, making our gatherings even more inclusive and impactful. Join us as we prepare for the next International Degrowth Conference in 2027. If you have ideas or wish to organise events, we’d love to hear from you! Degrowth Institute hit the road this week to kick off our Campus Dialogues series. First stop was University of Notre Dame! We got to share a great discussion and food and drink as well! Thanks to Environmental Humanities Initiative (EHUM) for helping make it happen. Alixandra Underwood, Managing Editor at Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy, presented the Trophic Theory of Money (TTM) – a different way to understand GDP. Many have proposed decoupling GDP from environmental impact. Some solutions propose a new metric for prosperity. Instead of finding another metric to measure growth (be it economic or otherwise), TTM suggests that GDP is actually a great indicator of biodiversity loss, pollution, and other negative impacts on the environment. It frames the human economy within the larger biological trophic structure. Trophic Theory of Money supposes that money originates via agricultural surplus; this surplus creates the freedom for others to specialize their work in something other than farming (or extraction). These new activities can then be measured by environmental impact. This holistic interpretation puts GDP under a different lens. A lens that grounds and provides shape to economic growth. And it gives a very different meaning to $27 trillion!!

  • Next week we'll be at University of Notre Dame discussing the Trophic Theory of Money, in partnership with Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy and the ND Environmental Humanities Initiative. What's the Trophic Theory of Money? It's a way of describing the real economy that mirrors ecological trophic levels (photosynthesizers convert energy from the sun, herbivores eat them and are then eaten by predators; finally decomposers return everybody to the soil). CASSE will give us the details. If you're around South Bend, stop by and join the conversation with Alixandra Underwood and Degrowth Institute's own Jason Barahona!

Circularity and degrowth are both about "balance and intention" - so these concepts should be working together toward true sustainability! That's one of the conclusions that came out of this conversation with Garr Punnett and Sabira Lakhani on the Selling Circular Podcast. I had such a good time talking with them and I'm grateful for their willingness to challenge economic growth alongside me and the Degrowth Institute. Many #degrowth advocates come from a #circulareconomy background because it's becoming clear: the benefits of our waste-reduction work are being erased by the incessant need for economic growth. We must pair our efforts with an equitable and intentional limit on the size of the economy. We must challenge the need for economic growth! Please give a listen at https://lnkd.in/gBZcWuW6

?? The Degrowth Movement: Rethinking Economic Progress. ?? Can we create prosperity without endless growth??In an era of climate crisis and resource depletion, the degrowth movement is gaining traction. Sifting through the polarizing articles, I wanted to understand why some LOATHE this movement. Sabira Lakhani and I chatted with Dr. John Mulrow of The Degrowth Institute to explore the topic on The Selling Circular Podcast and we only scratched the surface. Core Ideas: ?? Reducing overconsumption in wealthy nations ?? Redistributing resources more equitably ?? Shifting values towards care, solidarity, and sustainability What Degrowth Is NOT: ? It's not about living in poverty or recession ?? It doesn't mean sacrificing quality of life Degrowth advocates argue that infinite economic growth on a finite planet is unsustainable. ?? Super crazy right?! Instead, they propose transforming our economies to operate within planetary boundaries while improving human well-being. This movement calls for a radical rethinking of progress, challenging us to envision a world where "less can be more." What are your thoughts on degrowth? For anyone interested in following up with articles that both challenge and accept some degrowth principles: The Washington Post - "Ending growth won’t save the planet" The New York Times - "Shrink the Economy, Save the World?" The Guardian - "These ideas are incredibly popular: what is degrowth and can it save the planet" The Atlantic - "Is America Ready for ‘Degrowth Communism'?" Jacobin Magazine - "Four Problems for the Degrowth Movement" Harvard Business Review - "In Defense of Degrowth" #Degrowth #SustainableEconomics #ClimateAction #economy #consumption #circulareconomy #circularfashion

Tons of positive energy at last week's Degrowth Cafe, where guest speaker Alyssa Mendez (University of Chicago) presented on Degrowth & Activist movements, focused on energy transition advocacy and land defense. In our breakout groups we discussed existing movements, right here in Chicago, that are already working hard on ushering in a just and sustainable economy. At Degrowth Institute we advocate for an intentional downscaling of the *global* economy, a necessary step for achieving ecological and social justice goals. Fair and democratic downscaling is how we'll prompt the macroeconomy to support thriving local movements. In the coming months, we'll be taking our degrowth cafes on the road, sparking conversations in Washington DC, Atlanta, GA and Austin, TX. Stay tuned for more at: www.degrowthinstitute.org!
