Startup founders have a lot of responsibility to shoulder and most critical (and oft-overlooked) of all is talent acquisition. You just can’t compete without the right people in every position. Yet a lot of founders struggle with recruiting because they came from companies with a TA or HR team that handled everything from creating job requirements and marketing roles to screening, recruiting, and closing candidates. This is why I was so impressed when I spent time talking with Shashi Kiran Chilappagari, CTO of DeGirum Corp., a Bay Area startup focused on designing easy-to-integrate hardware for edge AI inference and a cloud-based test and development platform. Shahsi had a successful career at Marvell before stepping away to explore new opportunities and starting DeGirum with his former Marvell colleague, Winston Lee. The two have successfully built their core leadership, engineering, software, and machine learning teams using principles that any founder can leverage. Here are some of Shashi’s key insights: ??Connections Matter: He shared stories about relationships he had with some of their first hires, underscoring the importance of personal relationships in attracting the first wave of talent - which is a strategy I advocate for startups. ??Organic Evolution of Culture - Shashi Identified that culture isn’t something static, it evolves. Founders should focus on creating an environment where culture can develop over time through shared experiences rather than deciding what the culture will be and finding people to conform to it. ??Know your Values: Shashi said DeGirum’s culture is very understated and everyone is heads-down and focused, which reflects their demeanor and work ethic - a core value each new member must ascribe to. ??Attracting Talent Through a Shared Vision: He explained that attracting the right talent requires that leaders effectively communicate their vision and goals. Founders should always articulate their vision and be transparent about the harsh realities of their company, as this will not only inspire the right people to join, it will turn AWAY those who aren’t aligned. ??Diverse Expertise and Collaboration: He identified the diverse expertise of their team, highlighting how multidisciplinary talent has benefitted DeGirum. Founders shouldn’t hesitate to bring in talent with a broad range of skills, to tackle complex challenges they’ll face in the future. He made a strong point when he said: “we hire for core software strength because in our view, ML is not too difficult to learn." Shashi and Winston have done a lot of things right in forming their close-knit group and the team has already achieved major milestones. DeGirum has two products in the market already and are working on their third, all of which has been achieved with just three designers! If they can continue to leverage those principles as they scale, they’ll have achieved a recipe for success. #semiconductorindustry #startups #artificalintelligence
