    A teaser below for a new version of our SideRider and RoofRider deflectors, which we should be able to reveal once we have applied for a new provisional patent. Trains have much lower fuel consumption than trucks partially because railcars draft one behind another, but large inter-car gaps remain between railcars which increase aerodynamic drag. These gaps slow trains down and raise their fuel consumption. Below you can see how much our small SideRider deflectors, easily glued on to the side of railcars, reduce the drag from this gap on full scale Autoracks in CFD. Our new deflector design is eliminating almost 40% of the drag from the gap. Savings from the gap are about a third higher than from the old design, but this results in almost a doubling of total savings at the car level due to other factors. Our new deflectors fit within the older design envelope, can still be made out of recycled rubber, and will be just as easy to install and maintain.

There is severe impingement and recirculation flowing downwards into the inter-car gap when the SideRider isn't present. Honestly these results give a much clearer example of our effectiveness then we were expecting to see.

    Tufts video from our testing of the SideRider on an Autorack model at TU Berlin this summer. This deflector, which is the gray piece you can see on both sides of the inter-car gap, reduced drag on the first railcar by ~14.7% with no crosswinds, however as you can see here there is still some turbulence left over in the gap.

    Here is an early look at our promising results from a wind tunnel test for our SideRider product for Autoracks at TU Berlin. We measured forces on the middle two cars of a three car consist behind a bluff body with and without different deflector configurations applied. Below are the % reductions in drag for 11 different different deflector designs in straight line, with closed and porous walls. The most effective design with porous walls reduced drag by 13.8% on the first car and 6.1% across both cars.
