Defense By Design

Despite the election theme of this news story, I want to focus on the *action* itself, which is where the real moral of the story lies. Here was the CFO of a well-known #nonprofit organization now facing the backlash of something he did "off-the-clock" but nonetheless "caught on camera." Time and time again to audiences, whether in conferences and conventions, employee training events, or continuing education seminars, I am beating the same drum again and again regarding this phenomena. To #hrmanagers #hrdirectors #riskmanagers #businessowners #smallbusinessowners #executives you really, really need to pay attention. This could be *YOUR* employee, *YOUR* executive caught in a similar controversy impacting *YOUR* company and *YOUR* reputation. And to simply think, "oh, but 'my' people know better," is naive at best, negligent at worst. Make SURE they know better by having instruction or conversation letting them know your expectations as a staff member. Whether it is simply going to the mall or grocery store, let alone out of town or the country, your safety is never about 'where' you are, but 'who' you're around or 'who' is around you. A phrase you need to become more familiar with, "two-factor authentication." This means before accessing your bank or online sites for purchases, you have to enter at least "two" (2) forms of identification or confirmation of your ID. With AI and fraud generated via AI today, savvy consumers are safer consumers, even more so when we are talking about online purchases. The perpetrator had recently been sentenced and had a criminal record as well as history of mental illness. Just as last week working with city employees in #oklahomacity, I referenced the challenges of confrontations with such individuals when/where a would-be attacker has (a) no sense of consequences, either due to prior incarceration and/or mental challenges and (b) obvious ability to carry out the threat. But it also speaks to how *situational awareness* whether on-the-clock or off as his victims were in *both* categories, must be taught by employers just as schools have done on so many topics impacting students for decades. For adults, where else where they receive such training? And by the way, both for the victims who were on-the-clock or off but still had employers and coworkers, what do you think 'those' workplaces are now like regarding their employee, friend, coworker now 'not' coming back...and they know why.
