EDITED: Addition Preparing for GovCon Reset: 8 Actions to Protect Your Business As the federal government shifts its contracting priorities, small GovCon businesses need to act now to stay ahead. Here my suggestions for 7 Actions you can do now - to protect your business and position yourself for success after this Govcon reset: 1. Cash Flow & Financial Protection ? Secure liquidity and renegotiate payment with primes, vendors, and staff. ? Explore alternative funding options like SBA loans and credit lines. ? Adjust indirect rates where possible. 2. Contract & Compliance Readiness ? Review contracts for stop-work or termination clauses. ? Defend contracts where needed—be proactive with contracting officers. ? Ensure certifications and cybersecurity compliance are current. 3. Workforce & Adaptability ? Maintain clear, empathetic communication to boost morale. ? Cross-train staff for flexibility and rapid pivots. ? If cuts to staff are needed—do it quickly so both you and former employees can find new work as quickly as they can. Offer them work when you win new contracts - many won't be available - and that's "good". 4. Refine Your Business Development ? Engage with contracting officers on active, pending, and canceled contracts. ? Stay vigilant on shifting agency priorities. ? Strengthen partnerships. ? Reevaluate your contract pipeline and staffing changes in your client agencies. Many feds/opportunities in your pipeline may be gone after the reset. 5. Refine Go-To-Market Strategy ? Automate processes for cost savings ? Explore state/local contracts ? Reduce federal dependency 6. Website & Messaging Overhaul ? Align your messaging with federal priorities. Remove "DEI" and references from website and market collateral. ? Stay proactive about potential contract reissues. These are fast and furious and can happen immediately. See #8 below. ? Position your company as mission-critical and ready to support agencies - emphasize "you (and other divisions) can do more by keeping us". ? Highlight the problems you solve for the Agency - not just describing your skillsets. Justify your value and worth to the client without mentioning your skills. Hint: Why is their job/life better b/c they work with you? 7. Seek Peer Review ? Seek a trusted peer to provide unemotional feedback on your plan before finalizing. 8. File Justification for Reinstatement w/CO ? A long shot - but easy enough to try to stay first in line. CO can use it immediately if the opportunity arises. Ex: "Dear CO, we respectfully request reinstatement of Contract #..... Our ROI to date is '10X,'/$XXXXX thereby demonstrating our mission-critical value."
