SSD Freya has been busy! She’s currently learning how to move her back legs independently of her front legs. This is a crucial piece of learning the cue “heel,” where she’ll pivot on her front feet to swing into place at her raiser’s left side so she’s ready to move forward together. It all starts with a box. Right now, SSD Freya puts her front feet on a box while her raiser waits patiently. As soon as her back feet move, her raiser clicks and gives her a treat. All this positive reinforcement will have her spinning around the box in no time! From there, the box will gradually become lower until SSD Freya can heel from anywhere. SSD Freya is also quite good at play retrieves! She loves picking up various objects and bringing them to her raiser, and her raiser makes sure she practices with objects made out of different things – wood, cloth, metal, plastic. This will help prepare Freya for targeted retrieves later in her training, meaning she will be specifically asked to pick up certain things. She loves going out in public! Working in public is a great way for her to practice not only the cues she’s learning at home and in puppy class, but also self-control. She’s learning to ignore all the distractions that come with working in public – new locations, smells, sights, sounds, and people. When she’s not training, SSD Freya loves to chew on bones and play ball. She’s a big fan of belly rubs!
