Why is muon technology particularly effective for scanning high-density maritime cargoes? “Unlike X-rays, muons ( Charged particles) pass through very dense materials with ease, including materials such as lead and steel, making them ideal for inspecting large, naturally shielded cargo containers. Since Maritime cargo often consists of massive and dense shipments, traditional X-ray or gamma-ray scanners really struggle to penetrate fully, generally leaving ≥30% of consignments not fully inspected! Muon tomography and the Decision Sciences Discovery? system provide a viable solution for thorough inspections without disrupting trade flow. Muon tomography can distinguish between different materials based on their atomic number and bulk density. This helps in identifying contraband and anomalies, such as shielded nuclear materials or smuggled goods, often hidden inside dense cargo sets. Unlike traditional inspection methods, often requiring devanning of the consignment, Muon tomography can negate the necessity for the opening of a majority of containers due to its exceptional, almost infinite penetration characteristics. ? Muons are naturally occurring charged particles (often referred to as cosmic rays) that penetrate Earth's atmosphere, as such they don't require an artificial radiation source to produce imagery and associated data sets. Did you know that Decision Science's Discovery? NII inspection system has no moving parts? That means its maintenance cost are minimal. You might also consider that Discovery? is passive using naturally occurring charged particles and generates no radiation. That means there’s no requirement to build protective walls or buildings to protect staff and drivers. Together this means that on average, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over the lifetime of the equipment is only about 30% of a typical High Energy X-ray system used by customs authorities at most ports and border crossings. Starting with our Product Manager, Sean Simon who gave a great Tech Talk to a packed audience and later in the day I was privileged to be moderating a plenary session debating "the transformative potential of detection technology by exploring the latest advancements in the field and highlighting their impact on enhancing border security, combating illicit trade, and facilitating legitimate commerce." with Customs experts from US CBP, ZATCA ( Saudi Customs ), Argentinian Customs as well as Dr Mark Procter from Rapiscan.
