As ugly as it’s been so far, everything happening in MAGA-world to date has just been setting the table. The extreme violence ticks off after passage of a federal budget that will make “the largest deportation operation in US history” possible. That’s not all the federal budget will do. It will also launch an extreme transfer of wealth from those with the least to the billionaire class. Medicaid will be “destroyed.” We’re told now to expect steep cuts in most basic social services, once promised to be off limits, including Social Security and Medicare. Because the goal of Musk and DOGE is not saving us money on “wasteful” programs. Research already shows that about 40 percent of Musk’s cancelled contracts have no fiscal impact (and the risks of eliminating many programs only beginning to be understood, such as infectious disease, disaster response, control of the nuclear stockpile, etc.) Lies about what has been shut down and the supposed “savings” are coming like a winter whiteout, as the Intercept highlights today. Hundreds of residents gathered in #GreyForest, #Texas, earlier this month to decry plans for 2,900 homes on the outskirts of San Antonio—expected to discharge a million gallons of treated wastewater daily into the #HelotesCreek #watershed. Those who have studied the project said contamination could reach local #water wells in less than a day after discharge. And, they warned, with #SanAntonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg amplifying the point, that contamination would inevitably reach the #EdwardsAquifer, which is relied upon by nearly 2 million area residents. Story: https://lnkd.in/gyUCkaX6 In the immediate aftermath of the horrific tragedy of a Black Hawk helicopter and an American Airlines plane crashing in Washington D.C., Donald Trump blamed DEI and specifically singled out disabled and BIPOC people. “He cited efforts by the FAA to hire individuals with disabilities, including dwarfism, missing limbs, and intellectual disabilities,” The Hill reported. “Brilliant people have to be in those positions,” Trump said. We should not be surprised that a man who has reportedly openly expressed admiration for Hitler and surrounds himself with white supremacists and figures like Elon Musk, who has given Nazi salutes while promoting antisemitic and anti-immigrant conspiracy theories, is doing this. We must unequivocally reject it. I am a disabled person. I am also Black, bi-racial, and queer. Disability is the only group anyone can join at any time, and none of you are exempt from joining it.
