TAXES AND FINANCIAL PLANNING MUST WORK TOGETHER. Here’s why: When I first opened my accounting practice in 1995, many clients came in with the same problem, UNEXPECTED TAX BILLS. They didn’t realize by the time they got to me; it was too late to fix anything. Frustrated, I realized, “I’VE GOT TO HELP CLIENTS AVOID THESE COSTLY MISTAKES.” So, in 2008 I added financial planning to my practice so I could help clients look forward, and plan for the future. It’s the best decision I ever made. Today our clients are mostly doctors and dentists. THEY’RE HIGHLY COMPENSATED BUT DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THEIR MONEY OR DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO DEAL WITH IT. SO, I BECOME THEIR FAMILY CFO. Jeff’s a great example. In the middle of a tax meeting, he leaned across the table and whispered, “I HAVE A LOTTA CASH. I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT. CAN YOU HELP ME?” “Of course,” I said. So, we looked at his tax situation before doing anything with his investments. We moved all their accounts under our umbrella, saving them TONS of money. We helped with IRA’s, retirement, insurance, and savings accounts. This made such a big difference in his life, that eventually, his kids opened accounts with us too. IT’S SO FULFILLING HELPING CLIENTS LIKE JEFF AND HIS FAMILY HAVE PEACE ABOUT THEIR FINANCIAL DECISIONS. It’s why I do what I do. And the best part is, my son Garrett has joined my practice.     Excited to announce my achievement of becoming a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER? Professional! Embarking on this journey with the CFP Board, I made history as the first Army soldier to leverage their Credentialing Assistance (CA) funds for my education while on active duty back in 2019. I started my first class with just my laptop in a tent in the Fort Irwin, CA desert during an NTC rotation! Reflecting on the late nights of studying, I couldn't help but recall my father's, Marshall Dearden, CFP, journey to CFP certification in 1999, which adds an extra layer of pride to this accomplishment. Transitioning from military life in 2022 to working alongside my first and original boss, Laurette Dearden CPA, CFP?, RICP?, at Dearden Financial Services LLC has been an invaluable experience. Learning firsthand the integration of holistic financial planning with tax preparation has been eye-opening. Laurette's commitment to her clients and the industry since her certification in 1991 has set a high standard that I aspire to uphold. Joining the ranks of CFP? professionals – a legacy passed down by my parents – fills me with immense pride. With just a handful of us (out of the 98,931 professionals) having dual CFP? professionals as parents, I'm honored to continue this tradition. But this journey doesn't end here! I'm dedicated to serving our client families and expanding our impact within the Avantax community.
