For Ashley W., a pharmacist and founder of Med Max Consulting LLC, the lack of accessible telehealth options can mean long, inconvenient trips to the doctor. 'As both a healthcare provider and a patient, I have yet to find any accessible telehealth services,' Dr. Walker explains. 'It's incredibly frustrating that I am forced to make long trips—often over four hours—just to visit a doctor's office due to the lack of accessibility.' Dr. Walker is a member of the Deaf Patient Coalition, hosted by DeafHealth as part of the “Building Capacity for Deaf American Sign Language Users in Virtual Healthcare PCOR/CER” project, which is funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award (EACB-35309). Change must be systematic, according to Jan Withers, Chair of the Board of Directors for TDIforAccess (TDI) and retired Director of the Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. ‘A systems-level change in healthcare is needed to ensure that every deaf patient experiences communication equity, whether their healthcare encounter is in person or virtual,’ Jan emphasizes. We join our friends in the Deaf and hard of hearing community in extending our sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Frank Robert Turk, Sr. and Marlene Turk for their sudden, devastating loss. Dr. Turk and Marlene lost their lives to carbon monoxide poisoning - a potentially avoidable, yet all-too-common tragedy. For the Deaf and hard of hearing community, auditory-only alarms are not just inconvenient; they are life-threatening. Yet, alternative emergency safety devices remain expensive and rare to find. The Turks’ story highlights a common barrier for members of this community. We are thankful for those committed to driving actionable change and ensuring accessibility and safety for all. After all, safety is not a luxury - it’s a human right. Let’s start asking ourselves how we can create an accessible world where safety is prioritized for everyone. #TheDDBHHTax? #AccessForAll #SafetyMatters

Navigating the healthcare system isn’t always simple for deaf patients. For Darian, Executive Director of DEAF, Inc. (Boston, MA), telehealth has been challenging when systems aren’t built with accessibility in mind. 'It starts with making an appointment, and the only option is a voice call,' Darian explains. 'After navigating the system and informing them that I am deaf, they realized that their telehealth system wouldn’t work without an interpreter.' Darian is a member of the Deaf Patient Coalition, hosted by DeafHealth as part of the “Building Capacity for Deaf American Sign Language Users in Virtual Healthcare PCOR/CER” project, which is funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award (EACB-35309). Due to the uncertainty in the public health sector, I noticed that there weren't any videos in American Sign Language (ASL) discussing what is currently happening with the measles or H5N1 (HPAI) outbreaks. I wanted to close the gap with essential information made by health officials by creating videos in ASL to provide access to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community. This way, the community can protect themselves and be properly informed. I decided to make videos in ASL and upload them to Substack. I plan on making more videos on various communicable and infectious diseases, along with updated information about the outbreaks. All videos will come with English captions, an English transcript, and a video description. I have included a link to my Substack. https://lnkd.in/e-fxwGK6

For Corey Axelrod, Founder and CEO of 2axend, ensuring accessible telehealth is more than just a goal—it’s a mission to empower the Deaf community. 'As a Deaf consumer, I have encountered accessibility challenges with telehealth, such as the lack of interpreters and captions,' Corey shares. 'My professional goal is to ensure our community has equitable access to healthcare and can be actively involved in their own care.' For Dr. Christopher Moreland, a deaf physician, Professor of Internal Medicine, and Interim Division Chief of Hospital Medicine from the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, telehealth holds enormous promise to bridge gaps in healthcare access—if designed inclusively. 'As a deaf person and physician, I have seen firsthand the challenges of inaccessible telehealth,' Dr. Moreland shares. 'However, I also see vast potential for technology to help bridge access in healthcare.' Dr. Moreland is a member of the Deaf Patient Coalition, hosted by DeafHealth as part of the “Building Capacity for Deaf American Sign Language Users in Virtual Healthcare PCOR/CER” project, which is funded through a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award (EACB-35309).
