Helping Businesses Create Deaf-Friendly Experiences
关于我们
Being Deaf and hard of hearing ourselves, our “why” drives everything we do as a team. It impacts our daily lives and our future, the future of our community and the future of our Deaf and hard of hearing children. For decades, “Nothing about us, without us” drove the Deaf Community. But even as disability rights awareness surged, our flagship review site, deaffriendly, took a step further in 2012: Filling a gap in Deaf and hard-of-hearing consumer needs with the crowd-sourced power of the Web. In 2016, deaffriendly Consulting was born from four years of aggregating the true lived experiences of thousands of Deaf and hard of hearing consumers – and channeled it into tried-and-true turnkey services. For too long, the consumer experience has been designed only for those who can hear: Customer service phone calls. Spur-of-moment museum tours or matinee shows. Walk-in appointments. You name it. As deaffriendly surpassed its 3,500th review last year, one thing became clear: Businesses want to be deaf-friendly … but often are lacking proper training. That includes brick and mortar, e-commerce, non-profits, Fortune 500, and more. Missing in many business customer service training is the education and training to serve the estimated 48 million Deaf and hard of hearing consumers in the U.S. Altogether, that’s a lot of buying power being left on the table – an estimated $9 billion, in fact! (Source: April 2018 report “An Undervalued Market: The Purchasing Power of People With Disabilities.”). Our niche expertise comes from a data-driven, heart-to-heart understanding of what Deaf and hard of hearing consumers want. The time to serve them is now – a commitment that impacts your bottom line for many generations.

Respect the Zone: Creating Inclusive Concert Experiences for the Deaf Signing Community Concerts should be a universal experience, but for Deaf and hard-of-hearing attendees, the enjoyment can be significantly hindered without access to clear visibility of the sign language interpreters. These interpreters play a vital role in bridging the communication gap, interpreting music and lyrics into visual language. However, well-meaning audience members can unintentionally disrupt this crucial interaction. Actions like blocking the interpreter's view or attempting to interact with them during the performance can hinder the communication process. To ensure a positive concert experience for all, many venues are now implementing signage requesting attendees to respect the interpreter's work area. These "Respect the Zone" signs help maintain a clear line of sight and allow for effective communication. How can we promote greater awareness of deaf-friendly tools and attendee etiquette? Have you encountered similar situations at events? Share your thoughts in the comments! #DeafInclusion #AccessibilityMatters #ConcertVibes #SignLanguage #DeafFriendly [ID:A graphic post advocating for respecting interpreters' space during events. ?? Congratulations, Washington, DC! ?? Washington, DC, has just passed landmark legislation requiring movie theaters to provide open-captioned showings during peak times! This is a major step forward for accessibility and inclusion, ensuring that the Deaf and hard of hearing community can enjoy movies without barriers. What does this mean? - Minimum of 3 open-caption showings per week during the first 2 weeks of a movie release. - At least one of these showings must occur during peak times. - Theaters must continue offering a minimum of 2 open-caption showings per week in subsequent weeks. Not only does this improve the movie-going experience for millions, but it also sets an example for other states to follow. Let’s celebrate this win and keep pushing for more accessible entertainment across the country. Businesses: Take note—creating accessible experiences isn’t just the right thing to do; it also enhances customer satisfaction and loyalty. ??
