  • With the recent LA wildfire, we felt it was important to talk about how these natural disasters impact our mental health in ways that are often overlooked. This reel highlights the emotional toll of wildfires and the importance of addressing their effects on our well-being. A heartfelt thanks to Melissa Elmira Yingst, Deaf Mental Health Advocate, and Jamie, Licensed Social Worker, for their contributions to this ASL content. Your work helps bring much-needed awareness and fosters healing within our community. If you or someone you know is feeling the mental health effects of the recent wildfires, know that you are not alone. Visit the link in our bio for resources and support to begin your healing journey. Inspired by this post: The Mental health impact of the California Wildfires by?@mentalhealthcoalition Transcript: Look in Comment. VD: Jamie is wearing a black shirt and sitting against a bluish/greenish background. Melmira is wearing a blue shirt and sitting against a white background. They both have their hair down. This shows a video of them alternating into a conversation relating to wildfire and mental health. Transcript:? Melmira:Experiencing a wildfire can leave lasting effects. Would you say it’s fair to call it a form of trauma? Jamie: Absolutely. A wildfire isn’t just a natural disaster—it’s a traumatic event. Facing danger, losing belongings, or being displaced triggers a fight-or-flight response. For many, it can feel like their safety and stability are taken away instantly. Melmira: And what are some signs someone might be experiencing trauma after a wildfire? Jamie: Common signs include recurring memories or nightmares, feeling on edge, emotional detachment, or avoiding anything that reminds them of the event. It’s similar to symptoms of PTSD. People might also experience physical symptoms—like a racing heart, tension, or even exhaustion—because their bodies stay in survival mode. Melmira: It makes sense. Wildfires aren’t just a physical loss—they affect mental health deeply. Jamie: Exactly. Understanding that these reactions are normal and seeking support—whether through therapy, a support group, or even talking with loved ones—can help you process the experience. Melmira: That’s why it’s so important to share resources. If a wildfire has impacted you or someone you know, know that support is available. The Deaf Mental Health Hub aims to centralize resources specifically for the Deaf community, creating accessible pathways to healing. This is where we start—reach out, connect, and take the first step toward recovery together.

  • Please share resources and contribute to creating a greater impact on mental health and wellness within the Deaf community. <3

  • Access to mental health care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Yet, for many in the Deaf community, systemic barriers such as language inaccessibility, cultural misunderstandings, and a lack of inclusive resources continue to stand in the way. The Deaf Mental Health Hub is here to change that. We are building a platform that prioritizes: Accessibility: Connecting Deaf individuals to ASL-fluent, culturally competent providers. Inclusion: Offering tailored resources and tools that reflect the diverse experiences of the Deaf community. Empowerment: Creating a space where individuals can take charge of their mental health journey with the support they deserve. This work isn’t just about bridging gaps and creating systemic change. Together, we can build a future where mental health care is accessible, inclusive, and empowering for every Deaf individual. Join us in this mission.
