According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, the U.S. faces a shortage of 7 million affordable homes and rentals. And the project team behind Timberview VIII, an eight-story, affordable housing development, believes our industry can help change that number by introducing a sustainable and innovative material option – mass timber. Next week, attendees of the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland will get a firsthand look at this milestone project; but you can check it out right now by clicking our feature short film, “The Good Project.” And be sure to check out our last video where DCI Principal, Shirley Chalupa, PE, SE, walked us through the engineering decisions behind Timberview VIII, along with our project partners’ channels for their individual takes on this amazing project. https://lnkd.in/gnmQachX The Timberview VIII Project Team: Owner - Curtis Rystadt Structural Engineers - DCI Engineers Architect - Access Architecture General Contractor - Truebeck Construction Mass Timber Installer - Carpentry Plus, Inc. Combined with one-on-one interviews, DCI is ME is demonstrating what makes our individual experiences so special and is celebrating the differences – as well as the similarities. “It’s unusual in today’s culture to work at one place for more than a few years, let alone what’s been my entire career; but there’s a culture inherent to DCI that’s unique: the ability to own what you’re working on but always be supported, always part of a team. I stay for the people, the projects and the pursuit to be better – for myself and my clients.” --Danielle Jacobs, Principal & Former DCI Intern

Last Friday, DCI sponsored the fifth annual Clean Lake Union Paddle Race fundraiser, and a trio of DCI Jessicas, featuring Jessica Martinez, PE, Jessica Congdon, CPSM, and Jessica K. Lim, P.E., competed together on the water. Clean Lake Union has spent the past decade focused on improving the water quality of the urban Seattle lake, primarily through collaboration with commercial landowners, developers, and government officials to promote the installation of bioretention swales. This year’s paddling event raised a record breaking $65,000 towards their cause! On August 22nd we held our Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Akin (Childhaven). The event was a huge success, with over $98,000 raised to help children and families throughout Washington break the cycle of abuse and neglect and get set up on the path to prosperity. This year we transformed The Golf Club at Newcastle into Camp Wanna-Putt, a summer camp for AEC leaders. Sponsors of the tournament pulled out all the stops decorating their holes! There were giant squirrels, archery ranges, corn hole competitions, s’mores stations and so much more for campers to enjoy as they played their way through Newcastle's two courses. We’re so thankful for everyone who made it out to play a round with us and who made donations to this great and vital cause! We can’t wait to see you all at next year’s tournament! Special thanks to our premiere sponsor CBIZ! https://lnkd.in/g2jai_YF #DCIEngineers #DCIGolfTournament2024 #DCISeattle #DCIisMe #DCICulture #AECIndustry #Childhaven #Akin #StructuralEngineering #StructuralEngineer

Last month, DCI’s Salma Syed, PE, Project Manager; Sarah Cigna, Senior Project Engineer; and Kristina Simitian, Structural Intern, joined fellow project members, local officials and community members for the ribbon cutting of a highly anticipated supportive housing project in LA. Beacon Landing, the first of five HHH bond projects that DCI is working on, is a four-story, wood volumetric modular, permanent supportive housing (PSH) project that will provide 88 units for individuals and families in LA. “One of the highlights of the ceremony was hearing from one of the residents,” noted Salma. “She expressed immense gratitude for moving into Beacon Landing as she finally has a bed to sleep in, a kitchen to cook meals in, and most importantly, a sense of safety and security that she had not known for nearly two years.” #DCIEngineers #DCIDesign #DCILosAngeles #SupportiveHousing #WoodModular #Modular #RibbonCutting #StructuralEngineering #StructuralEngineer #BeaconLanding Suzanne Clemmer, Factory OS, Abode Communities, LA Family Housing, AMJ Construction Management, BERNARDS BUILDERS, INC.

For the past several years, the Puget Sound region has been absorbing a share of refugees from Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Venezuela – three countries facing turmoil and creating unsafe spaces for their inhabitants. While individuals, often families, are unquestionably better off in the United States, their situation is far from secure upon arrival in the Seattle Area. Most are being shuttled to a couple of churches in South Sound, where they’re set up in tents on parking lots. DCI’s Seattle and Everett office groups recently teamed up with the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) for a drive to collect clothing, furniture and other necessities for refugees. Business Development Manager Tom Woodcock and Executive Assistant Sharon Spillman rallied our teams to fill five large donation boxes and numerous garbage bags full of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, microwaves, cooking utensils, lamps, TVs and hygiene products. “We moved 119 asylum seekers into housing this past week, including 67 children,” noted LiHi Executive Director Sharon Lee. “We are working on helping 50 more people this week. Our staff is extremely dedicated, and we really appreciate DCI’s contribution in improving people’s lives!” ?
