March is National Reading Month! We're excited to celebrate by sharing why teaching reading is so crucial. Did you know that only 31% of students nationwide are reading at grade level? However, Washington, DC stands out as a district making significant strides in advancing our students' reading skills. Stay tuned throughout the month as we highlight more reasons why reading education is essential! #NationalReadingMonth #EducationMatters #ReadingIsFundamental

We empower DCPS teachers with evidence-based training to transform literacy instruction and student outcomes.
关于我们
At the DC Reading Clinic (DCRC), we are changing the game for young readers, equipping educators with the tools and strategies needed to make a real difference in literacy outcomes. DCRC is a hands-on, research-based clinical practicum dedicated to transforming literacy instruction by empowering teachers with necessary knowledge and skills, informed by the science of reading, of how struggling readers learn to read. Since its launch in 2018, we've trained over 500 teachers and directly supported thousands of K-2 students in mastering the foundational skills that set them up for lifelong success. And the data speaks volumes: students of DCRC-trained teachers have significantly better reading outcomes than those taught by non-DCRC trained educators. Among at-risk students, 70% were reading below grade level at the beginning of the year but this dropped to 33% by the end of the year, and on average, Black students showed the most improvement. Students in the classrooms of DCRC-trained teachers were 10.2% more likely to advance at least one reading level compared to their peers in non-DCRC classrooms and saw higher attendance rates for Kindergarten and first-grade students. As DCRC continues to grow, our mission remains clear – to help every student become a confident, capable reader.

We are rocking and rolling in our middle school pilot classrooms!
While observing in one of our Middle School Pilot classes this week, I was (and continue to be) overjoyed by the progress students have made. Students who struggled to read CVC words at the beginning of the school year are now reading multisyllabic words! I’m proud of the students, the teacher who is committed to their success, and the gains we’re seeing and will continue to see in the months ahead! DC Reading Clinic

The DC Reading Clinic is highlighted as part of the efforts by DC Public Schools to advance literacy, as reported here by CEPR.
What makes the Education Recovery Scorecard different from the recent NAEP release? What information should leaders walk away with—both for the action districts still need to take, and the bright spots to learn from? Listen as CEPR Executive Director Christina Grant and CEPR Faculty Director Thomas Kane, a co-author of the Scorecard, discuss these questions and more. https://lnkd.in/dcf7qfpC

We need to establish a “standard of care” for secondary literacy. ?? Today, DC Public Education Fund co-hosted the Strengthening Secondary Literacy Summit alongside partners Amazon and Coaction Collective, which brought together secondary literacy leaders from across the DMV. In the shadow of the NAEP data released this week, which shows only 29% of our country’s 8th grade students can read at a proficient or advanced level, the issue of secondary literacy feels more urgent than ever. One of the incredible panelists at the Summit today, Dr. Simone Gibson, asked, “What does it do to the psyche of an 8th grader, who isn’t able to read? What does it do to the psyche of that 8th grader’s teacher, who isn’t able to help them learn?” Equipping secondary literacy teachers with the skills they need to teach using the science of reading will, of course, require innovation - but it also asks us to take a look at what is currently working, and how we can build upon it. I will always go to bat for teachers, and I was inspired by the leadership in the room that was ready to advocate for stronger teacher training, for protected time to plan, and for the structures that help educators be successful. And I’m so proud of DCPEF's and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS)'s DC Reading Clinic, which has shown incredible results year after year, and is expanding its secondary footprint to serve more teachers and students. Growing programs like DCRC and establishing the standard of care - defining best practices and collaborating across the literacy ecosystem - is critical. Our students can't wait. #SecondaryLitSummit

Our collaboration with the DC Public Education Fund enables us to sustain and expand our efforts each year. Thank you for the recognition, Jim Kline.
The latest #NAEP results are in, and they confirm what many of us expected: national trends remain stagnant post-pandemic. But here in DC, the data tells a slightly more encouraging story—our investments in math and early literacy are working. DC’s fourth graders outperformed both national and large-city averages in reading, and we saw the largest math improvement in the country at the fourth-grade level (tied w/ Delaware). But let’s be clear: our overall proficiency rates remain far too low, and deep achievement gaps persist. This progress didn’t happen by accident. Intentional, sustained investment in what works makes a difference. Deep investments in teachers, curriculum and professional development over the last few years has put us on a path forward. The DC Reading Clinic has also played a critical role in strengthening early literacy by equipping teachers with evidence-based reading instruction, and these results reinforce that the strategy is paying off. Now, we need to bring that same focus, urgency, and innovation to math to continue advancing us forward as a district.? ? At the DC Public Education Fund, we are laser-focused on bringing additional philanthropic resources to DCPS to advance academic and whole child outcomes for our students, with our top priority being math innovation in year ahead. Funders: don’t see these results and conclude that our schools aren’t worth investing in. When we’ve paired targeted public and private resources with research-backed strategies, we’ve seen real progress. Now is the time to double down—not pull back—on investments that help students build the skills they need to thrive. Much more, much more data analysis coming soon... #DCEducation #Math #NAEP https://lnkd.in/eG5RsdGq
