Barry Farm is a special place, one that brings back fond memories of my time growing up in DC. Being back in the neighborhood this week for the grand opening of The Asberry underscored what I’ve long known about Barry Farm – it is the heartbeat of Anacostia. The Asberry has 108 affordable homes, including 77 replacement units for former Barry Farm residents. And it is just the first piece in reestablishing this vibrant community for generations to come.?Construction is already underway on the Edmonson, which will add another 139 affordable homes, and future phases include additional multifamily buildings, townhomes and homeownership units. By working together with our local government partners, DCHA will continue to bring more affordable housing to our city that our residents are proud to call home. Thank you to DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, DC Housing Finance Agency, DC Department of Housing and Community Development and the many others who share our vision. Yesterday, we celebrated a step forward for Barry Farm! ???? DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, DCHA Executive Director Keith Pettigrew, Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Preservation of Affordable Housing, Barry Farm resident Shawntay Vines and more community members cut the ribbon on The Asberry, the first affordable housing building delivered under the New Communities Initiative at Barry Farm. We also broke ground on the Edmondson, the second new construction building in the redevelopment. Together, these two buildings will add nearly 250 affordable homes to Anacostia. Our DCHA seniors got an early start to celebrating Thanksgiving! ?? Yesterday, we treated our senior residents to a special luncheon with a catered meal and a live band.

As part of Bullying Prevention Month, dozens of DCHA youth gathered for our "Anti-Bullying Peace Rally" on Oct. 26 at the EnVision Center. The kids made new friends while creating colorful anti-bullying signs. They also used this rally as a safe space to talk about their experiences related to bullying and brainstorm ways to prevent it. Along with the earnest discussion, the event offered plenty of ways to have fun with a DJ, dance contest, games, refreshments and a raffle. Thank you to the agencies and organizations that supported this event! ??
