Dayton Children’s is lighting our patient tower green to shine a light on safety! We’re joining injury prevention organizations across the country to raise awareness on Injury Prevention Day because we know your child's safety is all that matters to you! Here’s why injury prevention matters: ?? Injuries are the #1 cause of death for ages 1–44, and kids are most at risk. ?? In 2023, over 23,000 kids came to our ER for injuries like car crashes, bike accidents, and dog bites. ?? Every year, 700+ kids visit us after accidents involving ATVs, bikes, scooters, and skateboards. Our injury prevention team spent the day spreading the word and sharing free resources at their table. They helped families learn about safety tips and provided useful information to reduce the risk of serious injuries. This Injury Prevention Day, we’re celebrating safety through stories like Tatum's. In April 2023, 15-year-old Tatum was in a serious ATV accident—but her helmet saved her life. Tatum's story is a powerful reminder of why we focus on injury prevention, today and every day for kids in our community! Injury Prevention Day is about raising awareness and reducing preventable injuries. Let’s protect all that matters to you by teaching our kids the importance of safety, one helmet at a time. ?? It is with heavy hearts that we share that David Kinsaul, Dayton Children’s third president and CEO, has passed away. David Kinsaul was named the third president and CEO of Dayton Children’s on April 7, 2003. He came from Children’s Health System in Birmingham, Alabama, where he served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for 14 years. During his nine-year tenure, Dayton Children’s completed major facilities projects such as the Outpatient Center, the Wallace Critical Care Complex, and the Soin Pediatric Trauma and Emergency Center. Under his leadership, Dayton Children’s also embarked on the largest IT project in its history – a $25 million installation of the EPIC clinical information system. At the same time, the organization was working to better meet the needs of families by taking services to the outlying areas with projects such as the Springboro Outpatient Care Center and the Beavercreek testing center. We will miss David and all that he gave to the hospital and his community. Our thoughts are with his family during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in David’s memory be sent to Dayton Children’s at https://lnkd.in/gife6AnB.

What a difference a few months and help from a lactation consultant can make! After a traumatic birth, baby Archie found himself in the NICU at Dayton Children’s just a few days after going home. While there, Archie’s parents saw a lactation consultant to help him learn how to have a successful breastfeeding latch. But at discharge he was still struggling to do so without the help of a shield. Archie and his mom visited Katie in the outpatient lactation clinic at Dayton Children’s and began working on getting off the shield. Within a few appointments with Katie, Archie was no longer needing the nipple shield and has since been breastfeeding like a champ! Archie’s mom, Logan, says “I’ve told every mama, pregnant and postpartum, that I know about the Dayton Children’s lactation clinic so that everyone can experience the joy of the breastfeeding bond!” Do you need lactation support? Meet Dayton Children’s first Health Equity Fellows, Addie and Megan! These University of Dayton students and aspiring physicians are helping us take bold steps toward making healthcare more accessible for underserved communities. As part of a cohort of eleven fellows, they begin their journey as sophomores, dedicating a combined 300 hours to community service, supporting outreach events at Dayton Children’s, and assisting with research to support our health equity efforts. As pioneers of this program, the cohort is discovering meaningful ways to give back to the community where they live and grow! “It's easy to forget just how much Dayton has shaped me, and continues to influence my path. Developing skills in community engagement and working with hospital administration has made me more confident as I prepare for medical school,” shares Addie. Dayton Children's is proud to support the education of these future healthcare leaders who are dedicated to advancing health equity by participating in this fellowship program!
