Two years ago, Jamal started experiencing troubling symptoms—he wasn’t eating, he rapidly lost weight, and he had blood in his stool. As his condition worsened, his family brought him to Dayton Children’s, where after testing, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that caused severe inflammation throughout his digestive system. He had ulcers and lesions that caused him tremendous pain. Jamal began treatment, but after 3 months his body began rejecting the medicine. His health spiraled further when he contracted a severe C. diff infection, keeping him in the hospital for a month. Dr. Kelly Sandberg, Jamal’s gastroenterologist, and the rest of his IBD team presented Jamal with several treatment options. At just 9 years old, Jamal made the brave decision to have an ileostomy—a surgery where his appendix and most of his colon was removed, requiring him to live with an ostomy bag to help manage his symptoms. Despite the difficulties of recovery, including missing weeks of school and adapting to life with his ostomy bag, which he affectionately named “Jerry,” Jamal has shown incredible resilience! He continues to learn how to manage his new routine, and his positive attitude has never wavered. Since his ileostomy surgery, Jamal has experienced two prolapses, where his intestine pushed out through the stoma, into his ostomy bag. Despite these setbacks and missing out on some typical childhood activities along the way, Jamal’s journey has been one of courage, resilience and growth. He is full of personality and a friend to everyone. His love of music and dancing keeps him going, and if you ask him, he wouldn’t change a thing about his decision to have surgery - his ostomy bag has been lifesaving, allowing him to enjoy life without constant pain! To date, he has had two surgeries and will soon have his fifth scope. This upcoming scope will help determine if his ostomy can be reversed! His family is eager for what’s to come, knowing that Jamal’s strength and courage will continue to guide them forward. ??
