Innovation in Fan Overhaul for ACE Locomotives At Dayton-Phoenix Group, we’re committed to improving performance and reliability in locomotive cooling systems. Our latest advancements in the 54" radiator cooling fan motor retrofit for SD70ACe locomotives focus on reducing the high temperatures that historically led to bearing failures and insulation degradation. ?? The Challenge: The original 54" two-speed, two-winding fan motors operate at elevated temperatures, resulting in issues like degraded insulation life and premature bearing failure. When bearing failures occur, the fan motor can seize, causing further damage due to stator overloads. ? ??? The Solution – Vented Hub Design: Our engineering team developed a ventilated hub, featuring six slots in the hub and grooves in the bearing housing. This design enhances air circulation within the motor, significantly reducing operating temperatures: Temperature Reduction: In TH8 load tests, our ventilated hub design lowered bearing temperatures by 22°C in low speed and 29°C in high speed, closely matching the performance of the 48" fans. Extended Component Life: With reduced temperature stress, the fan’s motor insulation and bearings experience less wear, increasing their lifespan and reducing the risk of unscheduled maintenance. ? ?? Easy Integration: Our ventilated fan is a direct replacement, requiring no modifications to the locomotive's wiring, software, or contactors. This simplicity ensures a smooth integration with existing systems while enhancing operational efficiency. ? ?? Proven Reliability: Since 2010, our ventilated fans have been tested in field environments, including challenging conditions on Class 1 locomotives and across Australia. With years of proven reliability in the field, our fan solutions deliver enhanced durability, reduced maintenance needs, and optimal cooling for locomotive fleets. ? ?? A Superior Retrofit Option: In addition to the two-speed, two-winding ventilated fan, Dayton-Phoenix Group offers a two-speed, single-winding retrofit that provides even better performance in demanding applications. ? Optimized motor rating at 90 HP with an RPM of 2600, aligning closely with original specifications while using existing infrastructure like the AUX GEN stand and blower wheel. Railroads using this solution are already seeing significant improvements, as it helps prevent costly engine failures due to blower issues—at a fraction of the repair cost.
