While breast cancer continues to impact younger women, it is also disrupting their ability to grow their families, as one local woman has seen. “I just want to be a mom,” said Lauren Luckoski, a Miamisburg High School English teacher. While breast cancer deaths have dropped 44% over the last 35 years ― treatments have prevented approximately 517,900 breast cancer deaths, the American Cancer Society said ― the number of people who are diagnosed, particularly among younger women, is increasing. Luckoski, who was 33 when she was diagnosed, had already been struggling with fertility issues and pursued in vitro fertilization with her husband, Jamie Luckoski. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to be pregnant just because of how reactive my cancer is to estrogen and progesterone,” said Luckoski, who underwent a double mastectomy and multiple rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy at the Kettering Health Cancer Center. The earliest Oakwood junior Kay Handler can remember struggling with her own thoughts was at six years old. In 2017, though, Kay hit her head and had a severe concussion, her mom, Erin Handler, said. Erin said Kay began to struggle more after that. “I sought at the time to get care for the concussion, and it was not provided,” Erin said. “So afterward, I tried to get mental health care because I noticed a steep change in everything.” Her mood changed, she lost interest in what she was doing and her behavior changed, Erin said. It took almost a year to get an appointment at Dayton Children’s for a psychiatric evaluation. Kay was able to get a diagnosis for generalized anxiety disorder and Erin said things changed for the family afterwards. They connected with providers and were able to get help. “As a parent, it’s just the most incredible feeling, just to have that feeling of, oh my gosh, maybe I’m starting to connect with my kid again, and to have that be gone, it’s terrifying,” Erin said.
