As a child taking art classes at The Dayton Art Institute (DAI), Michael R. Roediger, MSLD, CFRE never imagined he’d one day head the internationally recognized fine art museum. For the last 12 years, he’s been director and president of DAI, responsible for setting the strategic mission and vision of the non-profit organization, as well as overseeing all aspects of day-to-day operations, with support from the leadership team. Founded in 1919, DAI spans 5,000 years of art with an encyclopedic collection of more than 27,000 objects. “I get to lead one of the finest art museums in the country and be around incredible art every day. And, I am the first native Daytonian to ever lead the museum. What is there not to be passionate about?!” He appreciates the DAI team’s shared focus on being community-based. Creating opportunities for DAI to go out into the schools, and bringing students of all ages to the museum for tours and art-making experiences is a full circle moment for him. Michael graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1990 with a dual undergraduate degree in communications with concentrations in public relations and theatre. “ONU has had a history of attracting smart and creative young people. I was never the top in my class, however, my creativity was encouraged and developed exponentially while at ONU. Research shows that creative and empathic professionals are equally required for most professions. Visited the Dayton Metro Library two weeks ago and had the pleasure of chatting with Karen, a long-time staff member with an impressive 43 years of service at DML. Karen graciously shared insights about the library and local history, making our visit truly welcoming. Thank you, Karen, for your dedication and warm hospitality! Explored many interesting aspects of DML, including a local artist program connected with The Dayton Art Institute in which classic art is reimagined for artworks at the main library and its branches. This bold exhibition expresses the collector’s personal interest in finding emergent artistic voices and powerful artistic statements that speak to prominent social issues of the day,?including those relating to LGBTQ+ communities and reproductive rights. All major media are included: paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs and textiles, and themes range from humorous and irreverent to thought-provoking. Internationally recognized artists include Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Ana Mendieta and many others, featured alongside under-recognized and local artists. One of the highlights will be Carolee Shneemann’s?Interior Scroll?(1974/75), a groundbreaking achievement of feminist art that remains relevant and controversial to this day.
