On Wednesday, November 6, Days for Girls hosted a webinar with South Africa’s Department of Basic Education, MIET AFRICA, and UNICEF, entitled, "Advancing Menstrual Health in South African Schools: Aligning with Girls' Vision for the Future." The session covered key insights on menstrual health education, programs, and resources for learners across South Africa. MIET Africa shared findings from their recent study on sustainable MH practices in South African schools, emphasizing the need for product choice and highlighting challenges in managing menstrual waste in education environments. Excitingly, survey results showed 82% of learners are open to washable pads, with 63% recommending DfG washable pads! However, the study also showed that 51% of learners lack facilities for safely disposing of used products. Webinar participants proposed solutions to advance menstrual health in South African schools, including health education for all students, better restroom facilities, and school-wide support for period-positive environments. This webinar highlighted the power of education and product choice in supporting girls to make informed health decisions. Meet Naana, our incredible Days for Girls' Programs Director for Program Offices, based in Accra, Ghana. Since joining in 2013 during a Kit-packing project, Naana now oversees our offices in Kenya, Uganda, and Nepal, supporting leaders, partnerships, and community projects. Her cross-cultural leadership and problem-solving skills make her a key player in driving DfG's global mission. With a passion for menstrual health, Naana is dedicated to supporting girls and women with the resources they need to thrive. She is currently pursuing her Master's in Sexual Reproductive Health Policy, a degree which will help her on the path to breaking down menstrual stigma worldwide. Meet Martha Rodriguez, a champion for women and girls in the Dominican Republic! Having witnessed period poverty firsthand, Martha dedicated her career to public health, working on government policies to improve reproductive education and menstrual health. In 2020, Martha founded ProInfancia, a Days for Girls Social Enterprise, to support women and girls through menstrual health education and economic independence. With a team of 35, ProInfancia creates DfG Kits and teaches girls to manage their cycles with dignity. Martha's work continues to transform lives, and she remains driven by her passion for service. Introducing Severina Lemachokoti! As a dedicated member of DfG’s International Board, Severina is a passionate advocate for gender equity. Since joining DfG in 2016, she has been a steadfast champion for menstrual equity worldwide. Severina is also dedicated to promoting the rights of indigenous peoples, particularly through human rights activism and conflict resolution. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology and a Master’s degree in Liberal Studies focused on Community Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies. With this background, Severina brings a unique perspective and many skills to her work with DfG.
