?? UNICEF research reveals how Aussie kids are navigating misinformation, deepfakes, and online privacy challenges in an AI-driven world. UNICEF Australia's 'A Generation Online' report reveals that young Australians are increasingly exposed to AI-generated misinformation, yet many lack the skills to detect it. Deepfakes are already being used in political campaigns worldwide—imagine the impact this could have on upcoming elections in Australia. A few striking statistics from the study caught my attention: ?? 56% of children and young people have encountered deepfake content, with 15% seeing it shared or created by a friend. ??Less than half (43%) of children and young people believe it’s important to verify information before sharing it and only 34% feel confident in identifying misinformation online. ?? 70% are uncomfortable with how their data is collected and used—yet 55% still hand over sensitive personal information to access online platforms. ?? 82% are uncomfortable with their photos/videos being used to train AI models. ?? 66% don’t like companies predicting their behaviors based on personal data. With AI literacy more critical than ever, Day of AI Australia’s 2025 program is designed to equip students with the tools to: ? Identify and analyse AI-generated media ? Understand the impact of deepfakes ? Navigate data privacy and consent in an AI-driven world ? Know what to do if they’re affected by AI-generated image-based abuse ?? New in 2025 as part of Day of AI Australia's refreshed and expanded materials: ??♀? Elections & AI – How AI is being used in political campaigns ?? AI Safety, Data Privacy & Consent – Empowering students to be informed users of AI tools ?? AI Ethics Debate & Developing AI Guidelines for the Classroom – Encouraging critical discussions on responsible AI use AI is already shaping the world these students will inherit. How do we ensure they’re prepared? Let’s start by giving them the skills to question, analyse, and think critically about the AI-powered content they see every day. UNICEF Australia's work in this space is vital and underscores the importance of involving children and young people in policy development so that we can create digital environments that genuinely promote their safety and wellbeing. Check out the full report and recommendations here: https://lnkd.in/gn9y95Km Keen to hear your thoughts and takeaways from the research in the comments!
Every child deserves to navigate the online world safely.? ? To better protect children online while allowing them the freedom to participate, we need to understand how children interact with the digital world. Our groundbreaking new report ‘A Generation Online: Ensuring children and young people thrive in a digital world’- produced with the support of the Telstra Foundation - is a critical step towards a safer online space for children and young people.? ? We’re calling on policymakers and the tech industry to:? - Build safer platforms and technologies that protect young people from harm, while equipping them with the information and skills they need to navigate the online world.?? - Strengthen laws to better protect children’s data so that it is only collected and used in ways which serve their best interests.? - Meaningfully engage with children and young people about the online world and work together to design better solutions.? ? We’re working with governments, partners, industry, communities – and most importantly, young people – to ensure a digital world which minimises risks and harms to children’s safety and wellbeing, while also allowing them to learn, connect and thrive online.? ? A big week at the 56th SIGCSE Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education in Boston! ?? Our Program Director, Natasha Banks, had the opportunity to present a Poster Paper on the impact of Day of AI Australia, exploring how we’re supporting teachers, our goals, challenges, and approach. Huge thanks to co-author Dr Jake Renzella (UNSW) for collaborating on this important work. Natasha also co-hosted a Birds of a Feather session (a highly interactive discussion) on "Building Global AI Literacy: Preparing Teachers for the Future of AI-driven Classrooms" alongside Dr Jake Renzella and Dr Sasha Vassar (UNSW). Together, they shared key insights from our program, facilitated discussions on AI’s growing role in education, and provided valuable resources to help teachers integrate AI into their daily work. Incredible conversations, big ideas, and a huge step forward in empowering educators for an AI-driven future! Recently I had the immense privilege of joining Jake Renzella and Sasha Vassar at SIGCSE Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education in Pittsburgh. Jake and I presented a Poster Paper with insights on Day of AI Australia, and together with Sasha, we hosted a Birds of a Feather session with teachers and computer science education researchers where we discussed learnings from our program, shared AI literacy and teaching resources and heard from a group of teachers about their experiences. It was a really fantastic session. We got to meet so many great people who are working in the AI literacy space and I particularly enjoyed chatting with teachers who are interested in learning more about how they can use the technology in their day to day work and how they can help prepare their students for an AI-powered future. Connecting with others working in this space was such a great way to start the year and I'm excited about many of the research and collaboration opportunities that came up. If you're working in AI literacy or education, either here in Australia or overseas, we are always interested in collaborating, sharing learnings and seeing how we can reach more teachers and students (particularly girls, First Nations kids and those in government schools!). If this is you, get in touch! #AILiteracy #SIGCSE #DigitalLiteracy #AI #ArtificialIntelligence

???? Meet Maryam Hashemi ???? AI is becoming more powerful, but how do we ensure it’s understandable and trustworthy? As a PhD candidate with UNSW, Maryam works on Explainable AI (XAI)—developing algorithms that generate clear, automated explanations for AI decisions. Her research focuses on defining principles that make AI behaviour interpretable for non-experts, bridging the gap between complex AI models and real-world users. By improving transparency, she’s helping to build AI systems that people can trust and rely on. Happy International Women’s Day! We hope you’ve enjoyed celebrating these incredible women at the front of AI research with us this week. #IWD2025 #InternationalWomensDay

???? Meet Maliha Mian ???? As a Postgraduate Student and Academic at UNSW, Maliha's research combines engineering, computer science, cognitive science, and psychology to explore how stress and anxiety impact learning in computing and web development. By using physiological sensors to track heart rate and skin conductance, she studies cognitive load—the mental effort needed to learn. Her goal? To develop AI-driven adaptive learning systems that detect stress patterns and support students with emotion regulation strategies, improving learning experiences in STEM. #IWD2025 #WomenInSTEM #AIforEducation #EdTech
