    Is this the end of Carrefour in China? ?? ?When Carrefour opened its first store in Beijing in 1995, it received overwhelming attention. "At that time, shopping at Carrefour was a fashion," recalled a former old employee. "Imported goods, shopping carts, barcode checkouts, these things that seem common now were all new things at the time." ?? In the mid-2010s, Carrefour started showing clear signs of struggle, with net sales dropping to RMB 27 billion (EUR 3.6 billion) in 2018. Despite Suning acquiring 80% of its stakes in 2019, it didn’t stop it declining. In 2021, Carrefour had 205 stores in China, and in 2024, it plummeted to only 4 stores. ?? Supply chain issues and the rise of e-commerce contributed to Carrefour’s struggle. Carrefour adopted a “light asset and high efficiency” operation model that facilitated its rapid expansion in China but later became a challenge. By the time Carrefour sought to build a more sophisticated supply chain system, its competitors, including Walmart and RT-Mart, were already ahead. ?? In 2023, Carrefour in China denied rumors that was filing for bankruptcy. According to a statement from Carrefour to the Global Times in January 2024, it is “making an active transformation and upgrading to tackle with the challenges”. However, despite these reassurances, Carrefour’s future in China remains uncertain.   • Ozempic – a medicine for adults with Type 2 diabetes – is gaining attention for weight loss in China ?? Ozempic, introduced for type 2 diabetes, has caught the attention of consumers seeking weight loss. It is the brand name of semaglutide, a member of the GLP-1 drug class. ?? In June 2024, China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approved the scope extension of Ozempic’s market authorization, adding the long-term weight management indication to its previous Type 2 diabetes Mellitus scope of use. It is the first time a GLP-1 drug received approval for weight control in China. ?? China’s concern over its surging obesity rate could contribute to a more open stance towards GLP-1 therapies. This is reflected through the official framing of Xinhua, the largest state media, which deliberately reported a more staggering estimate of the overweight population in China, 50%, as opposed to the more optimistic figure from the WHO. ?? In 2024, its population fell to 1.408 billion for the third consecutive year and its birth rate was 6.77 births per 1,000 people, making it vulnerable to the “low-fertility trap”. ?? This persistent decline in birth rates can be largely attributed to a combination of factors such as rising living costs, shifting societal attitudes toward marriage and family, and the increasing pressures of career development. However, another significant and often overlooked contributor is the increasing prevalence of infertility. ?? The infertility rate is rising in China.
