When it comes to critical healthcare environments, there’s no room for error. At the Dallas VA Medical Center, DAX Contracting Solutions took on a full-scale design/build remodel of the pharmacy compounding areas, ensuring compliance with USP 800 standards and VA guidelines. From demolition to new HVAC, electrical, and mechanical systems, this project required precision, expertise, and a commitment to quality for those who served.

Today for #WomenInConstructionWeek, we are featuring Jamie Shultz! ??What inspired you to pursue a career in construction??? A lifelong friend was looking for an administrative assistant, so I reached out and helped build our construction division as well as the other divisions within our company.?In the seven years I have been with DAX we have gone from 3 employees to over 30, it has been amazing to be part of the growth process and watching all of the success. ??Can you share a moment when you felt particularly proud of your work in construction??? Being part of building our construction team from the ground up has definitely been rewarding.?We have a great construction team and have completed many successful projects. ? How do you see the construction industry evolving in terms of gender diversity? ? I have been part of most all of our interviews for all our positions, and we have hired several women that have done a great job in this industry. ??What advice would you give to other women who are considering a career in construction? ? I would say go for it!?Learn as much as you can and never quit learning.?There are so many different fields within construction, I think there is something for everyone.

Today for #WomenInConstructionWeek, we are featuring Melody Raines! ??What inspired you to pursue a career in construction? ? As a child, I dreamed of being an architect. I would go to the local lumber store with my dad and buy magazines filled with floor plans, studying them until the pages fell apart. 9/11 happened after I left for college, so, I put my education on hold to join the military. After transitioning back to the civilian world, I took a job working for a very large construction outfit, assisting several project managers on a massive USACE project with the Dept. of Defense. Seeing construction from that angle changed everything for me. I wanted to be a part of the tangible experience – I wanted to be on site and watch it all come together. ??Can you share a moment when you felt particularly proud of your work in construction? ? Early in my career, I was building homes outside of Dallas-Ft. Worth.?Every home was unique with various challenges and requests from the homeowners. I loved being a part of helping people design and build their dreams. Soon, I had homeowners coming to my subdivision – not for the location – but because they wanted me to build their home. My boss emphasized the significance of folks completely changing the town they were living in because they found it more important that I be the one running the job. Those owners could see that I took great care in every detail.?? ??How do you see the construction industry evolving in terms of gender diversity? ? Construction is a results-based industry.?As the industry has accepted diversification, the true winners are the owners of every project. Bringing different folks into the industry means bringing different strengths in. Women provide a unique perspective, allowing for innovated problem solving across the field, a crucial component for any contractor to stay relevant and competitive in today’s market. These detailed critical thinking and communication skills save time and money from the top down. ??What advice would you give to other women who are considering a career in construction? ? Construction is a multifaceted industry, with a wide range of projects encompassing an even wider range of important roles. To any woman interested in pursuing a career in construction, I would encourage them to find the niche that excites them, and they excel at. Reach out to those that you know in the industry and ask questions. Get on a job site and experience the noise and the dust. Go into an office and see the research that is behind design and estimating. Trade shows are a great opportunity to meet a wide range of industry folks who have time to talk and answer questions. There is a place for everyone who wants to be a part of this fast-growing and fast-paced industry.
