Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Lei (LAY) A lei is a traditional Hawaiian, Polynesian, and Filipino garland made of flowers, leaves, shells, feathers, or even paper. Giving and receiving a lei is an important cultural practice, symbolizing peace, love, honor, celebration, or friendship. Common events during which a lei may be distributed include graduations, weddings, award ceremonies, and school dances. Often the composition of a lei determines its significance. A lei made using hala fruit, for instance, is said to be connected to love, desire, transition, and change. We’re proud to sponsor Hawai?i Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day, which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ?ōlelo Hawai?i, in everyday conversation. Tune in to HPR every weekday at 7:28 a.m. HT for the Word of the Day and visit our page every Friday as we highlight and celebrate ?ōlelo Hawai?i. #WordOfTheDay #Hawaiian #Hawaii #Language #Culture #Lei

Makahiki begins when the constellation Makali‘i (Pleiades) rises at sunset, usually in mid-November, and lasts until the end of February. Often known as the Hawaiian New Year festival, Makahiki is a time to honor the Hawaiian God of agriculture, Lono, and celebrate his life-giving rains, the bountiful harvest, and the fertility of the lands and the people. Forty years ago, Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners revived the practice of Makahiki on Kaho‘olawe and have since perpetuated the practice by conducting annual opening and closing ceremonies. DAWSON has proudly supported Makahiki ceremonies on Kaho‘olawe many times over the years, helping preserve and maintain the rich cultural practices of Native Hawaiians.?? ? Let us take a moment this Makahiki season to reflect on the success, blessings, and bounty that 2024 has offered. May your Makahiki season be abundant and joyful! Hau?oli Makahiki Hou! Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Koa Koa, or Hawaiian Koa, is a native Hawaiian forest tree. It is also known as Acacia Koa. The Hawaiians have treasured this flowering tree for hundreds of years. They have used it when building outrigger canoes, paddles, decorative boxes, and furniture. Koa is an excellent tone wood that produces a rich, warm sound; hence, it is?used when making ukuleles. The supply of Koa is somewhat scarce, so the Hawaiians have started replanting their beloved tree. Koa wood represents strength and courage. Koa is also represented in the DAWSON values. ·?Kuleana – Fulfilling our responsibility to do the right thing ·?‘Ohana – Building a foundation rooted in family and community ·?Aloha – Embodying humility, respect, and compassion for all We’re proud to sponsor Hawai?i Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day, which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ?ōlelo Hawai?i, in everyday conversation. DAWSON ‘Ohana Spotlight: Ross Jackson, Senior Analyst, Professional & Technical Services In October, Ross Jackson completed the Gran Route of the Gran Fondo Hincapie-Greenville. This biking event started outside of Hotel Domestique, owned by retired American professional cyclist George Hincapie, in Travelers Rest, South Carolina. This year's event was held just a few weeks after Hurricane Helene swept through the area. The route, a 19-mile loop between Charlotte and Asheville that Rick completed four times, was switched up due to the hurricane damage. Several professional cyclists participating in the journey included Bobby Julich, Jan Ullrich, Christian Vande Velde, Bradley Wiggins, and all-time Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish. After the ride, there was an auction to benefit the citizens of Polk County, North Carolina, who have graciously supported the Gran Fondo for the last 13 years. Friday’s Hawaiian Word of the Day Kuleana The Native Hawaiians have a unique relationship with land and culture that is deeply rooted in the concept of kuleana. Kuleana is a Hawaiian word that roughly translates to “responsibility and privilege.” It refers to the idea that each person has a responsibility and privilege to care for and protect the land and the community to which they belong. Kuleana is also one of the DAWSON values and reminds us to always fulfill our responsibility to do the right thing. We’re proud to sponsor Hawai?i Public Radio’s Hawaiian Word of the Day, which encourages awareness and use of the Hawaiian language, or ?ōlelo Hawai?i, in everyday conversation. This month, Hawaiian Native Corporation, DAWSON’s parent company, was honored to sponsor the inaugural Native Hawaiian Organizations Association (NHOA) Community Showcase at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu. This event successfully brought together non-profit organizations and Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs) participating in the SBA 8(a) program, all with a shared mission to uplift and support our lāhui, and create an opportunity for connection, awareness, and partnership. ? The showcase provided a unique platform for NHOA members and community non-profit organizations to connect, meet, and partner with each other. It created awareness of NHOs among community organizations, promoted a tighter NHO community, and showcased the benefits of being an NHOA member.?? ? The NHOA is a trade association established to provide a unified voice for NHOs NHOs are non-profit organizations authorized by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to participate in the 8(a) Business Development program.
