The Nā Koa Wounded Warrior Canoe Regatta, at Fort DeRussy Beach, is one of the many exciting watersports events that make up Duke’s OceanFest. The annual regatta races were established to honor and support wounded warriors of the armed forces, their families, and the families of the fallen. This event was open to active-duty service members, Veterans, and Gold Star family members. Launched in 2009, Nā Koa Canoe Regatta was created to assist recovering troops through the ‘healing power’ of the Hawaiian waters. The first event occurred at the Pearl Harbor Marina with 67 teams from the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, and other organizations. The event has since expanded to include a Youth Division and the Gold Star ‘Ohana in the Wounded Warrior Division. The Honolulu Navy League sponsored the event in 2013, and the Hawai‘i Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army has hosted the event since. The regatta has quickly gained popularity in its short lifespan with nearly 1,000 participants attending the 2019 race. The Hawaiian Native Corporation, DAWSON’s parent company, was honored to sponsor this event to honor Veterans, fallen service members, and their families. ?? September is Hawaiian History Month! ?? Let’s take this time to honor and celebrate the rich history, culture, and traditions of the Hawaiian people. From the ancient voyagers who first navigated the Pacific to the vibrant, resilient communities today, Hawaiian history is a testament to the strength, wisdom, and deep connection to ?āina (land) and kai (ocean). As we remember the legacy of ali?i (chiefs), kahuna (priests), and the many generations who have shaped these islands, let’s commit to preserving and sharing these stories. Hawaiian history isn’t just the past; it’s a living, breathing part of our present and future. Kīpuka o ke Ola (KOKO), a Native Hawaiian Health Clinic, has been established to address Native Hawaiian health disparities in North Hawai?i. KOKO is designed to provide a full range of bio-psycho-social services to the residents of North Hawai?i, with an emphasis on serving Native Hawaiians. It provides culturally informed direct services, actively collaborates with other like-spirited individuals and organizations, and is led by the community that it serves. KOKO serves approximately 2,750 patients, of which 41% are Native Hawaiian. According to the Hawai‘i Department of Health’s Hawai‘i Health Matters, Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander populations in the KOKO service area of North Hawai‘i (Waimea, South Kohala, North Kohala, and Hāmākua) range between 24-37% of the total population. Therefore, KOKO is favorably over-represented in serving Native Hawaiians. The Hawaiian Native Corporation (HNC), DAWSON’s parent company, is happy to provide funding to KOKO for a much-needed 14,000 sq. ft. facility as they have outgrown their current space. This expansion is crucial to address the urgent need to grow beyond the current space, enabling KOKO to continue its vital work and better meet the expanding needs of the community. The HNC is honored to support KOKO's efforts and looks forward to seeing the positive impact this contribution will have on the health and well-being of Native Hawaiians in North Hawai‘i. The Hawaiian Native Corporation, DAWSON’s parent company, is honored to provide financial support for the He`e Nalu project. This project covers 2,000 years of surfing history, from the earliest stories of surf deities to contemporary works of art to surfing innovations through the lens of 13 modern Kanaka Maoli creatives and cultural practitioners. The Hawaiian Native Corporation, DAWSON’s parent company, recently attended the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation’s (NHLC) Uluo?a 50th Anniversary. Uluo?a means to stand erect or upright, which speaks to the work of NHLC and the others in the community who have dedicated themselves to the preservation and protection of Native Hawaiian people, rights, practices, and places. Since 1974, the NHLC has provided legal assistance to families and communities engaged in perpetuating the culture and traditions of Hawai’i’s indigenous people. NHLC has served as a bridge between Western law and Native Hawaiian custom and tradition, successfully translating and informing Western jurisprudence from a Hawaiian worldview, protecting and preserving that which makes Hawai?i our home. Mahalo to the NHLC for all the great work they do that benefits the Native Hawaiian communities.
