Movember: A Reminder for Men’s Health November, known as Movember, is more than just an excuse to grow out facial hair. It’s a movement encouraging men to set goals that improve their mental and physical health. “We want to make sure we take care of ourselves,” says Jeff Patterson, owner of JP Hair Design. Since its start in 2003, Movember has sparked conversations about men’s well-being and the importance of seeking help when needed. But asking for help isn’t always easy. Dr. Alvin Thomas, a UW Madison professor and clinical psychologist, highlights a challenge: “Men are asking for help in different ways, but we’re not hearing it. When a man goes to a barber shop and says, ‘Man, I’m feeling down,’ that’s a man saying, ‘I need help.’” Unfortunately, the statistics paint a sobering picture. While 45.4% of White men aged 18-44 seek mental health support, only 26.4% of Black and Hispanic men do. Factors like mistrust in the healthcare system play a role, particularly in communities of color. That’s where spaces like barbershops come in. Barbers aren’t just cutting hair—they’re listening, supporting, and offering advice. “They trust us,” Patterson says. “Clients tell us what’s going on in their lives, and we can guide them.” Movember is a call to action: let’s make mental and physical health a priority. Whether it’s through growing a mustache, sharing stories, or fostering trusted spaces like barbershops, every step matters in breaking the stigma and building a healthier future for all men. Let’s keep the conversation going. How are you prioritizing your health this Movember? #DAWN https://lnkd.in/gQAA5R-7

?? International Men’s Day: Recognizing Men’s Mental Health and Well-Being ?? On November 19, we shine a spotlight on the often-overlooked mental health challenges men face, particularly in workplace environments that reinforce rigid masculine stereotypes. Research shows that workplaces encouraging hypercompetitiveness and “policed” masculinity negatively impact men’s mental and emotional health, leading to burnout, turnover, and quiet quitting. The pressure to appear tough, confident, and aggressive often forces men to suppress other traits, contributing to masculine anxiety—the distress caused by not living up to society’s narrow standards of masculinity. Here’s what we know: ???87% of men prefer environments that allow them to express empathy and kindness. ???High levels of masculine stereotypes correlate with sleep issues, poor psychological well-being, and burnout. ???Inclusive workplace cultures can significantly improve mental health and job satisfaction for everyone. How can organizations support men’s well-being? 1?? Promote Mental Health Resources 2?? Challenge Harmful Stereotypes 3?? Foster Gender Partnership Let’s use International Men’s Day as a starting point to challenge harmful norms, foster empathy, and create workplaces where everyone can thrive—free from the weight of stereotypes. #DAWN #InternationalMensDay #MentalHealth #InclusiveWorkplace #DEI #HealthyMasculinity Source: https://lnkd.in/gU_A6ffX
?? Empowering Educators for Mental Health Awareness: A Milestone Training in #Texas On Monday, Odessa High School hosted one of the largest Youth Mental Health First Aid training sessions in Texas! Approximately 1,800 teachers and instructional facilitators participated in this transformative program, equipping them with critical skills to recognize warning signs of mental health challenges in students, including #suicidal ideation, anxiety, and #depression. Taylor Roy, Executive Director of Guidance, Counseling, and Wellness for Ector County ISD, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “This training ensures that the adults who work with students every day can support their mental health needs effectively.” This groundbreaking effort marks the largest single-day training of its kind in the state. Under House Bill 3, all school personnel who regularly work with students must complete this training by 2028. The district is committed to phasing in the rest of the staff through ongoing professional development opportunities this school year, ensuring that no one is left behind. ?? National Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month: Together, Let’s Break the Silence ?? This November, we’re shining a light on men’s mental health, breaking down the barriers that often hold men back from reaching out and seeking the support they need. The journey to mental well-being is personal, yet the struggle is something many men share. From feeling misunderstood to carrying unspoken expectations of strength, men everywhere are encouraged to pause, reflect, and find strength in connection. Throughout this month, we’re amplifying stories like those of fathers, brothers, and friends who’ve taken steps toward healing by discovering support in the unlikeliest of places. Whether it’s finding peace in nature, having conversations around a campfire, or just connecting in a safe space with people who truly listen, there are countless ways to support mental wellness. For some, it’s about letting go of stereotypes and finding relief in sharing with others who can relate. This campaign is a reminder: You are not alone, and it’s okay to seek help. By embracing new experiences, sharing our stories, and connecting with others, we can create a healthier, more supportive world for men’s mental health. Join us this month in supporting the men in your life, encouraging conversations, and advocating for a culture that values emotional well-being for all. Let’s move forward together because mental health matters for everyone. ?? #DAWN #MensMentalHealthMonth #BreakTheSilence #SupportIsStrength #NationalCampaign https://lnkd.in/gtEend7y
