While the maternal mortality rate (MMR) for the United States reported last week by the CDC represents a significant decline since 2021, maternal mortality due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth in this country remains unacceptably high. When it comes to maternal mortality, the U.S. continues to operate in a class of its own. Healthcare spending in this country is among the highest in the world yet the rate of maternal deaths exceeds most high-resource countries and stark racial disparities persist. We also know that this data likely represents an undercount. It does not capture pregnancy-related deaths that occur in the late postpartum period, when we know that approximately one-third of deaths occur. Nor does it capture the impact of restrictive abortion policies as evidence is already emerging suggesting that the Dobbs decision has negatively impacted maternal health. The data reinforces what we already know: that women and children are disproportionately affected in times of crisis. The MMR spike observed in 2021 underscores how the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the existing maternal health crisis. Maternal health serves as a barometer of the broader health of a country, and it is clear that the health systems in the U.S. must be strengthened to withstand future shocks. The vast majority of maternal deaths are preventable. To continue to reduce pregnancy-related mortality in the U.S., Every Mother Counts reaffirms the need to prioritize maternal health across all policies, support community-led efforts to advance maternal health and birth equity, and transform our health systems to ensure accessible, equitable, and respectful maternity care for all.?
