What will it take to run the grid on clean energy 24/7/365?? One of the answers is data. Data was a key theme that emerged from our #ClimateWeekNYC panel, from informing demand-side flexibility and utility data to national capacity information that can support better development and faster interconnection. While overcoming key data challenges will be critical to realizing the completely clean grid, our CEO James McGinniss believes this future is closer than we think. Through a combination of solar and storage, he says, "parts of the U.S. are already well on their way to reaching 24/7 clean energy." Last Monday, we kicked off climate week by hosting a panel with Kiran Bhatraju, Darren H. S. Tan, and James McWalter moderated by Lisa Martine Jenkins to celebrate just a small cross section of the "grid tech" companies working to make a 24/7/365 clean energy grid a reality. That same day, we also released our long-term company strategy to run the grid 24/7/365 on clean energy and announced a fundraise led by Simon Wu from Cathay Innovation with support from existing investors Union Square Ventures, Keyframe, Equal Ventures, and BoxGroup. Why release the strategy now? The idea of 24/7 clean energy isn’t new, but its meaning has been lost. Coming up in the industry nearly a decade ago, I remember all the big companies were talking about their 24/7 strategies. While well-intentioned then, many of them are now quietly abandoning these commitments as they focus on hyper-scaling or seem content stopping at?greenwashy offsets. Our strategy instead is defined by delivering on this commitment, powering grids across the country every day with 100% clean energy – through the sunniest days and the century defining storms. And not just for large corporations with expertise and endless capital, but for any customer on the grid. Our model as an electricity retailer means we choose how to supply our own book of customers. If we can run our book on 100% clean energy, we can validate it’s possible and create a path for the rest of the grid to follow.
