As a medic during the Second Battle of Fallujah, Christine Knight stayed in the back of a tracked ambulance, ready to provide lifesaving care following the initial bombardment. “Sitting and not doing anything is the worst,” she added. When they began getting word of injured Marines, she helped treat shrapnel and gunshot wounds to the arms or legs. However, once the Marines reached the Fallujah government center, casualties began pouring out. The carnage she saw was unlike anything she’d experienced before. Knight’s story is just one of many included in DAV’s latest multimedia project commemorating the 20th anniversary of the battle and its effect on those who served during the most intense urban fighting since the Vietnam War. A recent explosion of interest has encircled psychedelics and their potential medical use. Psychoactive drugs like psilocybin—the active compound in psychedelic mushrooms—LSD and MDMA have long been Schedule 1 drugs but are now being investigated for their potential healing properties, particularly for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and other mental health conditions affecting veterans. As these veterans with PTSD and other mental health ailments remain hopeful for change, a growing number are turning to psychedelic treatment outside the US. #DAV #veterans #psychedelics #psychedelictherapy #PTSD #military

By engaging with coworkers and showing their support for veterans, several corporate teams took part in the 2024 DAV 5K Photo Contest, presented by Total Quality Logistics for both the virtual and Cincinnati races this year. The winning team from Stamford, Connecticut, is team AXA XL. Team captain Kevin La Salle and 69 of his co-workers participated as a first-time team this year. Congratulations Kevin! The 2024 DAV Distinguished Speaker Series, "The State of Innovation: How Some of the most Forward-Thinking Pro-Veteran Policies are Being Developed at the State Level," focused on the latest policy innovations at the state level and how these innovations are helping to meet the evolving needs of the veteran community. Hosted by the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School on Oct 9, the event's featured Coleman Nee, Vice-Chairperson, DAV Board of Directors among many other special guests. This year marked the 10th anniversary of the DAV Speaker Series. The goal of the series is to shine a spotlight on the many needs of disabled veterans and their families.
