But the top five manufacturing industries reporting 15% national increase in wages since 2021 certainly deserve recognition: ?? Ventilation, Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Commercial Refrigeration Equipment Two counties in Oklahoma (Tulsa & Oklahoma) report wage increases above 15%. While employment is up 32% in Tulsa County, Oklahoma County only saw jobs increase 5%. Lagging far behind, two major counties in Wisconsin— La Cross and Dane— experienced little growth.?Wages increased only 3% for La Cross and contracted 16% for Dane. Jobs decreased more than 5% in both counties. ??Electrical Equipment Counties who reported more than 1000 industry jobs in 2021 and report higher than 20% wage growth over a three year period include Harris County (TX), Jones County (MS), Erie County (PA), Hennepin County (MN), and Whiman County (WA). Out of all these counties Jones experienced the highest employment increase (65%) with 1661+ jobs. ? Pesticide, Fertilizer and Other Agricultural Chemicals Out of top states reporting more than 1,000 jobs, OH took the hardest percentage hit and saw wages dip 24% and employment 14%. Few of these states reporting wage growth experienced employment growth over 5%, the national average for all industries. IA, IN, GA and NC did see industry jobs increase more than 9%. ??Other Nonmetallic Mineral Products Curious what kinds of manufactured products this category includes? In addition to a wide variety of abrasive and cut stone products, one material is mineral wool—fibrous material made from molten mineral or rock materials that can then be used for insulating, soundproofing or filtration purposes. Lucas County (OH) reported the highest number of industry jobs in 2023 (1,760) and a 42% increase in wages over three years. ?? Beverages Texas, reporting second-highest 2023 industry wage numbers (after CA) reports 21% wage growth and 11% jobs growth. Looking nationwide at a group of six counties who each reported more than 1,000 jobs in 2021, wage and employment leaders include Bexar County (TX), San Bernadino County (CA), Summit County (OH), Buncombe County (NC), Sevier County (TN), and Hennepin County (MN). All experienced earnings and employment growth over 15%. In our analysis, we looked at four-quarter averages for each industry at national and county levels. For reference, annual US wages rose 8.5% and employment rose nearly 5% between 2021 and 2022. ? Mental health, Specialty and Non-Acute Services Experiencing High Wage Growth ? We recently looked at national wage growth across all healthcare industries since 2021, and noticed a few themes apparent in the top six: mental health, non-physician provided care, and services that could be termed “hospital adjacent.” Below are the top six industries, with some regional insights: ?? Other Ambulatory Health Care Services reports 22% wage growth and 10% increase in jobs. This industry includes emergency transport services, blood & organ banks, and health screening and prevention services. In?a group of states reporting?roughly 10,000 industry jobs in 2021, Arizona and Illinois stand out as wage growth leaders. Arizona employment increased 62% while Illinois experienced only 18% growth. ??♂? Offices of Other Health Practitioners is a diverse group including chiropractors, podiatrists, optometrists and non-physician mental health professionals. At a national level, this group reports wages increasing 18% and jobs 12%. Although most states reporting highest growth in this industry are clustered in the West, Georgia and Mississippi are two of only?three states reporting both wage and employment growth higher than 20%. ?? Residential Intellectual and Developmental Disability, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Facilities reports wages increasing 16% while Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals follows close behind at 14%. We observed that in states where wages for residential facilities have risen notably, wages for psychiatric hospitals have risen more modestly — and vice versa. ???For Home Health, wages went up 14%, while employment only increased 6%. Top states Indiana and Nebraska both report wage growth above 30%, with Nebraska’s largest county (Douglas) showing 23% increase in jobs. Neighboring Colorado saw wages increase 20%, but Kansas and Iowa lagged far behind with less than 5% growth. ?? Specialty (except Psychiatric and Substance Abuse) Hospitals reports?wages increasing 16%. Counties who reported more than 1,000 jobs in 2021 and experienced significant wage growth over 25% include Maricopa County (AZ), Orleans Parish (LA), and Orange County (CA). Machinery Manufacturing and Rental Industries Well-represented in List of National Wage and Job Growth Leaders ? Did you know that industries involved in machinery & vehicle manufacturing and machinery & vehicle rental/leasing are mostly reporting 11-16% national employment growth since 2021? Below are some insights, and a few exceptions to the trend: ?? Industrial Machinery Manufacturing and Agricultural, Construction & Mining Machinery Manufacturing both report 11% employment growth and wage growth higher than 15%. Within a pack of states where these industries each reported 2021 employment numbers between 800 and 4,000, Missouri saw a 64% wage increase. Two western states in this group (Idaho and Arizona) also report significant wage increases between 27% and 33%. ?? Commercial & Industrial Machinery & Equipment Rental & Leasing stands out with 21% increase in jobs and 34% increase in wages. Automotive Equipment Rental & Leasing isn’t far behind with employment up 16% and wages up 31%. ?? Though employment for the primary Motor Vehicle Manufacturing industry increased 13%, Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturing only increased 7% and Motor Vehicle Body and Trailer Manufacturing 2%. ?? Counties revealing 27+% auto rental industry employment growth include Lee County, FL; Suffolk County, MA; and Tarrant County, TX. All reported between one and two thousand jobs in 2021. San Bernadino County (CA) and DuPage County (IL) both reported similar job numbers in 2021, but only 10% and 9% increases, respectively. ?? In counties that reported between two thousand plus jobs in 2021 in the commercial & industrial rental industry, Clark County (NV) shows high employment growth at 42%. Orange County (FL) and Dallas County (TX) aren’t far behind at 34% and 31%. In our analysis, we looked at four-quarter averages for each industry at national and county levels. “Sin” Industries Led in Wage Growth in Past 2-years Nationally (and a few others) ??? Curious which industries report 10%+ national wage growth since 2021? Below are the top five industries in this category, and some regional insights: ?? Tobacco Manufacturing: The top four counties by 2023 employment numbers all experienced wage growth, with Wilson County (NC) leading the pack at 71%. Henrico County (VA) trailed behind at 37% with Daviess County (KT) and Davidson County (TN) reporting 26% and 18% growth respectively. ?? Beer, Wine, & Distilled Alcoholic Beverage Merchant Wholesalers: Top counties reporting 17%-18% wage growth where at least 100-500 new jobs were added per? county include Cook County, IL, Hillsborough County, FL and Clark County, NV. ?? Machine Shops; Turned Product; & Screw, Nut, and Bolt Manufacturing:? Maricopa County (AZ) and Wayne County (MI) both experienced significant growth in wages and employment, with Maricopa adding nearly 400 new jobs and Wayne over 500. Wayne saw 35% wage growth during this period, with Maricopa following at 18%. No other county reporting 3,000-4,000 total jobs in this industry as of 2023 experienced these rates of growth. ? Fuel Dealers: The top four counties reporting 15% wage growth are clustered in the Northeast: Suffolk and Dutchess counties in New York, Middlesex County in Massachusetts, and Oxford County in Maine. ?? Pulp, Paper & Paperboard Mills: Multiple counties in Washington and Georgia are showing job, wage and establishment growth. In Chatham County (GA) wages increased 33% and employment 17%, with 151 jobs added. Cowlitz County (WA) reports wages jumping 23% and employment 10% with an addition of 192 new jobs.
