If major US broadband providers targeted by the Salt Typhoon breaches had implemented fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) across their data retention systems, the breaches would have been useless. It is suspected that a Chinese hacker group called Salt Typhoon has breached U.S. telecom companies AT&T and Verizon. The cyberattack may have compromised systems used for wiretaps, posing serious national security concerns. This attack underlines the urgent need for strong data encryption. Last month the FCC ruled against AT&T for failing to protect sensitive customer data following an incident in January 2023 with data warehousing provider Snowflake that exposed a trove of sensitive data. The FCC said it expects carriers to take every reasonable precaution to protect customer data, including reasonable practices as they relate to cloud security, data retention, and disposal.
