When the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) needed a cost-efficient, open-source data lakehouse, we took on the challenge—no outside vendors, no long-running servers, AWS-only infrastructure. Our stack? DuckDB, SQLMesh, S3, and GitHub Actions. ?? But things got interesting when we debated Apache Iceberg vs. native S3 versioning and tackled the challenge of SQLMesh environments without a metadata catalog. This project pushed us to rethink modern data architecture and test the limits of today’s open-source tools. Would we make the same decisions again? Read the full breakdown here ??
