Reflecting on an incredible time at the Whole Girl Education National Conference last week! Feeling truly inspired after reconnecting with current and former colleauges, and hearing from powerhouses like Tina Tchen, Dr. Ruha Benjamin, and Valerie Jarrett. The sessions with organizations such as Girls Who Code and Riley's Way Foundation were thought provoking and provided many ideas I will use in my work. This month, 200 human services workers turned out to Albany to demand #JustPay! Our advocacy got us a 3.2% COLA for State-contracted human services workers in the one-house budgets - a major win. However, the budgets were missing Wage Board Legislation, which would help close the pay gap between government and nonprofit human services workers, who make 30% less than government workers for the same work. This legislation would establish a Human Services Wage Board to investigate these pay disparities and produce a report with recommendations on salaries and benefits of human services workers, which will be given to the Governor and Legislature. We signed the Call For Kindness Pledge! We are proud to partner with Riley's Way Foundation to share their Call For Kindness, which offers young changemakers (ages 13-23) the chance to participate in a dynamic Leadership Development Fellowship and win up to $5,000 in funding for a project that inspires kindness and strengthens their local, national, or global communities. Applications close on March 25th, 2024! Up to 40 youth-led projects will be awarded. In addition to the General Category, there will be ten awards focused on Education Equity, three awards in special category, A Kinder World for Animals Award, and one in each of the other special categories: Interfaith Connections and Dance and the Arts.
