Avoid jaw dropping cloud bills with this practical list of tips for cost management of cloud resources. PROBLEM:?? Cloud providers typically offer consumption-based pay-as-you-go pricing for their products and services, which makes it difficult to estimate and control costs over the long term. Cloud services are typically very simple and inexpensive to set up, which makes it easy for data producers, data consumers, and data team members to use more resources than intended. Billing may be presented in a totally separate portion of the platform, and it may be obscured from most users.? If a data team doesn’t have a good plan in place for how to control the cost of cloud services, it is unfortunately all too easy to be surprised by a larger than expected cloud bill.? SOLUTION: For starters, the data team should set up a budget and carefully consider where low cost services or open source tools can play a role. Depending on vendor selection, it may be possible to enable cost-based limits on services. It’s a good idea to build a cost containment monitoring and alerting dashboard. The dashboard should intake data from ETL logs and monitoring tools. The presentation of information from different sources in a single dashboard allows the data team to leverage cost information to proactively optimize data stack costs.? Communication and training also plays an important role in keeping costs down, as do frequent discussions about cost containment strategies amongst data engineers, data producers, and data consumers. CONCLUSION: Data teams need to proactively make cost containment a top priority as part of an effective cloud governance strategy.?They can do this by selecting a vendor with a credit-based pricing model or setting and sticking to budgets within a pay-as-you-go tool. A cost containment monitoring dashboard can help, as can communication and training for anyone with access to the cloud resources.
