I spent the morning in the studio with Victoria Woodard and Chris Frederick two of our faculty of the Online Master's in Data Science here at the University of Notre Dame. One of the things I really like about our program is that our faculty coordinate their teaching across classes. This gives our students a superior educational experience and a deeper understanding of the material. If you want to learn how to build AI and find answers in data while working full time, apply to our program and see the advantage a coordinated curriculum offers. #NotreDame #DataScience

??Calling all data enthusiasts!?? Join us for our next #TidyTuesday session on October 15th at 11am PST as we dive into the wild world of National Parks and the species that call them home! ???? This week, we're exploring data from NPSpecies, a comprehensive list of species recorded at the 15 most visited U.S. National Parks. We'll look at how species are cataloged and what evidence is used to confirm their presence. ???? Data source: https://lnkd.in/gayXDjZS As a twist, I took a deeper dive into using GitHub Copilot to handle some of the tasks I would usually turn to Google for. Spoiler alert: it was a game changer! ??? To make things even more fun, I created a playful #dataviz that highlights National Parks home to both coyotes and roadrunners, using images of Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner—because why not? ???????? ?? Zoom link: https://lnkd.in/gqa6-wS ?? Date: October 15th ?? Time: 11am PST Huge thanks to f.hull for curating the dataset. ?? Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gkhNfj4j. See you there for some #DataScience, laughs, and #NationalParks fun! #DataViz #Rstats #GitHubCopilot #Wildlife #NationalParks #LearningWithFun

?? Check out our colleague, John Behrens, on the Notre Dame Learning page, where he talks about generative AI and the importance of understanding how it can impact you and your business.
Have questions about where to start with generative #AI? The AI for Teaching and Learning video series is a great introduction. Produced by Notre Dame Learning and the Office of Information Technology’s Teaching & Learning Technologies (TLT) team, these short videos aim to help instructors get more familiar with #generativeAI in educational contexts. We’ll be posting a different video here each week for the next couple of months. Up first, John Behrens, director of the Technology and Digital Studies Program in the University of Notre Dame - College of Arts & Letters, provides an overview of generative AI, explaining its powerful capabilities in performing tasks once limited to humans, including text and image generation. John outlines five key concepts: AI’s extraordinary abilities, the variety of its outputs, associated challenges and risks, its impact on human tasks, and its evolving nature. He emphasizes the importance of understanding AI’s limitations and the responsibility users must take when utilizing these systems. We can't wait for our classes to start this Thursday! Danielle and the Class of 2026 will start with Probability and Statistics, taught by Dr. Victoria Woodard, and R for Data Science, taught by Professor Chris Frederick. These courses will build the foundation for all future semesters as they start to explore the data science process. The Class of 2025 will begin Advanced Machine Learning, taught by Dr. Brian Naughton,?and Behavioral Data Science, taught by Dr. Alan Huebner. Later in the semester, they will also tackle Advanced Data Visualization, taught by Dr.?Matthew Sisk.
This week I kick off my first week as a Masters student in the Notre Dame Data Science ????program. Earlier this month, the University of Notre Dame hosted us for immersion week where we met our teachers, fellow students, and had the opportunity to see (for a second time, and with fresh eyes) all that this beautiful campus has to offer. With exactly 20 years between my graduations - I hope 2026 will find me as a “Double Domer” and as cheerful as I am in this photo. #masters #student #notredame

It's crucial to acknowledge the efforts of those who contribute significantly, and last week's August Immersion at the University of Notre Dame was truly remarkable for us in the Notre Dame Data Science Master's program. Year after year, McKenna Hall serves as one of the venues for our collaborative sessions, and this August marked my final one as a student. The top-notch education and holistic learning experience with the finest educators globally have emphasized that, above all, Notre Dame is a hub for learning. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making this another unforgettable journey. Looking forward to reconnecting in January in Dallas! “Trust in science has been fairly stable over time, but it is beginning to show cracks.” Today at the Science Communication Conference — co-hosted with University of Notre Dame - College of Science —?keynote speaker Dietram Scheufele outlined shifts in the contemporary information landscape, from decreased reliance on legacy media to the emergence of rapidly evolving technologies. As this future unfolds, he explained, civic science will play a major role in productive paths forward. Speakers throughout the day added context to these next steps, from Dan Farkas’s discussion of process design to Matthew Facciani’s overview of identity in dialogue.?Thanks to our first group of panelists —?Tanya Berger-Wolf, Nancy Michael, Patrick Gamez, Perla Khattar, and Roger Woodard — who reflected on barriers to breaking down research, pivots in audience expectations, and multidisciplinary partnerships. Our second panel — consisting of Deanna Csomo Ferrell (formerly McCool), Josh Weinhold, Beth Grisoli, and Andy Fuller — shared novel insights on AI exploration, potential boundaries, and the aims of collaboration. Thanks to all attendees, panelists, and today's moderators, Nitesh Chawla and Brett Beasley, for bringing energy and expertise to these sessions! Photo Credit: Angelic Rose Hubert
