Spent the weekend at the AI Deeper Learning Summit, taking a deeper dive into what AI looks like for students and educators...there is a lot for me to reflect on, but cannot state how inspired I am by my team at Data Science 4 Everyone. They presented on the importance of data literacy and data science when it comes to looking at AI and how it will impact both education and our daily lives.

Hi everyone! Last week I had the opportunity to participate in the first ever Data Science K-12: Research to Practice Conference as a panelist! I was able to share some of my personal experiences, both as a mentor and as a student of data science, and share this with educators, researchers and advocates from around the world! Earlier that week, I also had the opportunity to serve as a mentor for students in San Antonio, where I mentored a team comprised of middle school students and high school for a Data Science Hackathon. This meant a lot to me personally because growing up, the lack of similar events made me realize how important these hands-on experiences are for inspiring passion in young minds. So to have the chance to help in that experience for others, where they can analyze data, identify underlying problems, examine how problems manifest through statistics, and explore possible solutions, is a privilege I cherish. A big thank you to Jocelyn Foran | Alesha Jones | @Zac Opps | Jason Black, PhD, for the opportunity to serve as a mentor. I also wanted to thank Lizet Casas, MPA for extending this invitation to me. I also wanted to thank Data Science 4 Everyone | The Concord Consortium along others, for producing this conference! #DSEK12 #DataScienceEducation

Conference season is in full swing! Last week, the sold-out DSE K-12 Conference brought together leaders from education, industry, and policy to advance data science learning.? In Zarek's latest Substack post, he reflects on what makes education conferences truly impactful—what works, what doesn’t, and how to make the most of your time. Check it out and let us know what YOU think makes a great conference in the comments! ?? https://lnkd.in/enx5inEv

It's officially conference season in U.S. education! First off, I am so proud of the Data Science 4 Everyone team for producing our first national conference last week in San Antonio, TX along with the The Concord Consortium, Council of the Great City Schools, Black Kids Predict, the Texas Rural Education Association, Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide, The University of Texas at San Antonio's School of Data Science, and so many other partners. The event was sold out and had a waitlist, and to help grow + spread momentum further, we are slated to host a number of state summits next year (if interested, apply here: https://lnkd.in/gGSrxQge) For this week's Substack, I wanted to write a few reflections on ed-conferences generally (while currently at the #AIDeeperLearning in Anaheim co-hosted by Digital Promise, aiEDU, Anaheim Union High School Dst, and UCI School of Education, who are knocking it out of the park as well). After traveling for 3+ years to education conferences for DS4E in nearly every school subject and stakeholder category, I've been paying attention to what works best for me and for the events generally. If you are attending conferences and convening over the next few weeks, I hope it may help: https://lnkd.in/geVNcZBy

    Grantmaking Manager, Siegel Family Endowment

A week ago I left the Data Science Education K-12: Research to Practice conference with a lot on my mind. Today, as the best conferences tend to do, it still has me thinking: How much more insightful and probing will students' questions become when they are empowered with data??How can a strong understanding of data-driven systems enable more meaningful engagement with AI and emerging technologies??How can data and creativity be brought together for more impactful opportunities for mutual understanding and dialogue? Some students are already living out the answers to these questions, but for now, they remain the lucky few—as Data Science 4 Everyone’s recent state of the field report (https://lnkd.in/erP9T5ZA) highlights. I'm looking forward to seeing more young people in action, demonstrating what data science can unlock.?Coming away from the conference, it's clear to me that there’s a lot of work that folks like me and the Siegel Family Endowment team need to do to ensure that data science learning opportunities are equitably distributed, and that the perspectives of students and their teachers are at the center of that work. As far as I can tell, this conference was a terrific step in that direction. Many thanks to everyone who made this special event happen! #DSEK12 #DataIsHuman
