We at Data Center Solutions (DCS) would like to take the time to honor the greatest generation on this day in history. June 6th 1944 will always be remembered! -Code Name "Operation Overlord" -The Allied Invasion of Normandy -The Beaches were named: -Utah -Omaha -Gold -Juno -Sword During the initial Invasion, Juno and Omaha saw the most levels of resistance, with Omaha being the worst. At Gold, two specialized tanks were used to disable two major German gun emplacements. At one end of Omaha Beach is a 100 foot cliff called Point du Hoc with what is believed to be five German 155mm guns covering Utah and Omaha Beach. The 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions are dispatched to take them out. 2nd & 5th Bat's arrive to withering enemy fire which keeps 5th Bat from immediately joining 2nd Bat on the initial battle atop the cliffs. 2nd Bat scales the cliffs using 100 foot rope ladders which they find out are not long enough so they finish the climb free hand, get to the top of the cliff to fight the German defenders. They fight the Germans, destroy the guns (which they find only 5) and defend against a counter attack, which the French villagers join the Germans on for the next day and a half. Finally 5th Bat and another Army unit show up to support them. At the end, about 90 of the original 225 Rangers that did the initial assault atop Point du Hoc are left uninjured and they, and the remaining elements from the 5th Bat, (they fought on the beach of Omaha) went on to continue fighting, which they went on to take out the 6th gun they found about 12 miles away then fought on for the rest of the war. Thank you to all of our fighting men and women from our greatest generation. We would not be free today without their bravery.
