Connecticut has seen a sharp rise in cannabis-related incidents involving children, with the state's Poison Control Center reporting at least 668 cases since 2019. Most cases involve young children accidentally ingesting edibles or teens experiencing severe reactions from overuse. Medical experts warn of serious health risks, including seizures, cognitive impairments, and long-term developmental issues. Young children often accidentally consume their parents' cannabis edibles, while teenagers may experience conditions like cannabis hyperemesis, characterized by uncontrolled vomiting due to excessive use. Dr. Craig Allen of Hartford HealthCare notes that symptoms can include seizures, unstable blood pressure, and rapid heart rates, sometimes necessitating intensive care. In response to these concerns, State Senator Saud Anwar has proposed legislation to reduce the allowable THC content in cannabis products by half and mandate that all edible cannabis items be uniform in color, aiming to make them less appealing to children. Attorney General William Tong has also taken action against illegal sales of THC products, particularly Delta-8 THC, in smoke shops. These products are often designed to resemble common snack foods, posing a risk to children who might consume them unknowingly. Many younger people are choosing to moderate or even ditch alcohol altogether, driven by a growing health-conscious mindset and a rise in sober-curious (and California-Sober) movements. This cultural shift is even influencing public health messages, with the Surgeon General ramping up warnings about alcohol’s long-term health risks, such as cancer, liver disease, and mental health issues. At the same time, cannabis, which was once heavily stigmatized, is increasingly viewed as a safer alternative to alcohol. With more states legalizing its use for medical and recreational purposes, the conversation around cannabis is shifting from criminalization to harm reduction. While it’s clear that cannabis carries some health risks, its overall risks are often seen as less severe than alcohol’s well-documented harms. That said, as cannabis use grows, we need to be vigilant about protecting children and pets from accidental consumption of cannabis and cannabis products—just like we do with alcohol. This means clear labeling, childproof packaging, and responsible usage guidelines. As public health efforts evolve, we’ll likely see more cannabis-related warnings, particularly around impaired driving and risks for vulnerable groups. As both alcohol and cannabis continue to shift in cultural acceptance and public health messaging, it’s important that we ensure the right safeguards are in place. In the end, whether it’s alcohol or cannabis, the goal should be responsible use, informed choices, and protection for those who are most at risk.
