This method makes it easier than ever to contribute to genetics research to improve the health and well-being of cats everywhere. Unlike traditional DNA collection, which requires saliva or blood, our cat-friendly approach allows owners to simply brush their cat’s fur to contribute to groundbreaking discoveries about feline health, behavior, and ancestry. Despite being our companions for millennia, cats are surprisingly understudied, and funding for clinical research is very limited. Why? A mix of superstition, persecution, and misconceptions has left our feline friends scientifically overlooked. From their association with witchcraft during the Middle Ages to modern-day misconceptions about their "low-maintenance" nature, cats have faced unique challenges that have kept them out of the research spotlight. But community science is changing that! Through community science, Darwin’s Cats isn’t just advancing our understanding of cats—it’s redefining what’s possible when researchers and pet owners join forces. Through free, fun surveys, Darwin’s Cats community scientists help our researchers get to know their cats in their home environment. When thousands of cat owners answer the same survey questions, a robust picture of cat behavior begins to emerge, one that can help debunk some of the most persistent superstitions and misconceptions about cats. Darwin’s Ark is excited to share the launch of Darwin’s Cats, our new nonprofit community science initiative to explore feline genetics and behavior. In 2016, Darwin’s Ark began exploring dog behavior and genetics through community science. Since then, more than 40,000 dogs and their people have contributed to breakthroughs in canine and human health, including identifying genetic causes of bone cancer and obsessive-compulsive disorder. (We also made the cover of Science!) For years, we've been asked when our community science initiative would include cats. We are thrilled to announce cats are now welcome aboard Darwin’s Ark! Cats are even less studied than dogs, which means that we have an even greater opportunity to advance scientific understanding of our favorite felines.
