A team of researchers from Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth recently received a $3 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a program of The National Institutes of Health, to investigate how well an evidence-based intervention in community health organizations across the United States can be sustained. The five-year grant will build on work started in 2001 by Dartmouth researchers to evaluate InSHAPE, a program developed in Keene, NH, to increase the life expectancy of people who have or are at risk of developing severe and persistent mental illness, by providing resources and supports to reduce the risks of hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and substance abuse. InSHAPE has since been implemented at multiple locations nationwide. Read more: https://lnkd.in/ed8APGHm

Although approximately 20 percent of the US population is rural, only nine percent of US physicians work in rural areas. According to the CDC, rural populations are more likely to die from heart disease, cancer, injuries, respiratory disease and stroke than those in urban areas. Two teams at Dartmouth Health are focused on advancing rural health care research and addressing health disparities. Together, they are having a positive impact on our communities. As the country celebrates Veterans Day by honoring those who have served the United States in the armed forces, we honor our Dartmouth Health veterans. There are hundreds, working in every location across our health system. These colleagues have served in the U.S. military in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard all over the world. They have served during peace time and during times of conflict and war, making great personal sacrifices to protect our freedoms. Our veteran colleagues are physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, allied health professionals and administrative employees—translating their military background and experiences into providing compassionate care to our patients. Our workplaces and communities are greatly enriched by their presence and dedication. In honor of Veterans Day, Dartmouth Health’s Military Employee Resource Group organized this celebration today at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Please join us in sharing a heartfelt thank you to all our Dartmouth Health veterans and military families. We are grateful for their service and sacrifice.
