Sally Todd was first diagnosed with carcinoid cancer, and later, her husband Clark battled small cell carcinoma. Through these challenges, they drew strength from each other. With the compassionate guidance of Drs. Kathryn Hourdequin and Konstantin Dragnev, they received support grounded in honesty, expertise, and unwavering support. Inspired by that care, Clark and Sally turned their gratitude into a powerful legacy. In 2024, they pledged a $50,000 planned gift to Dartmouth Cancer Center, to support the ongoing efforts that have been so instrumental in their journeys. Clark and Sally Todd's story is a powerful testament to strength, hope and resilience. Together, they faced the unimaginable: two separate battles with cancer. She describes her job as being sort of like an electrician for your heart. As a cardiology nurse practitioner specializing in electrophysiology, Caitlin Booze, CNP, uses devices to monitor the electricity responsible for the rhythm management of her patients' hearts at our Manchester clinic (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics). Each day, she monitors feedback from their devices. “Adjustments can be as simple as changing the alert settings to catch a heart rhythm that is causing patient symptoms on a loop monitor or turning on an algorithm in a pacemaker to allow the patient’s heart rate to increase with exercise,” Caitlin says. Research shows that social determinants of health—factors including food insecurity, education level, transportation access, and economic standing—impact 80% of health outcomes. Moreover, addressing these determinants has an impact on the well-being of healthcare providers, Sally Kraft, MD, Dartmouth Health's population health officer, told HealthLeaders. "It is distressing professionally to have a patient before you and you cannot address the needs that are impacting their health," Dr. Kraft said. "Understanding social care needs and putting systems in place to respond to those needs will decrease the moral depression and moral injury that occurs for frontline staff." https://lnkd.in/e3Ndespj

Without grants from the National Institutes of Health, our researchers won't be able to find new treatments or better ways of delivering health care for Granite Staters. Learn more in this news segment from WMUR-TV about Sen. Hassan's recent visit to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics - https://lnkd.in/eaQ9QkFz
We were honored to host U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) at Dartmouth Cancer Center today for a tour, and to discuss the importance of critical research funding from The National Institutes of Health. As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the work of Dartmouth Cancer Center clinicians and scientists is bringing us closer to effective treatments and cures for cancer every year. I appreciate Sen. Hassan's commitment to protecting NIH funding as Dartmouth Cancer Center works toward a world without cancer.
