Let’s start Monday with a UAS takeoff. Saturday was a great day to fly! Thanks again to GIS/Inventory Forester Jason Mack with Nuveen Natural Capital (Nuveen, a TIAA company Nuveen Green Capital) for the opportunity to create some value added data for his work at their Fowley Butte property near Prineville, OR. The weather conditions were great! (Just beat the snow)

DARS team member, Michael Roush had a great weekend, working with GIS/Inventory Forester Jason Mack collecting UAS imagery at Nuveen, a TIAA company Fowley Butte property near Prineville, OR. With only 2 bars of cell, Michael Roush was also able to hotspot the laptop, generate an ortho photo and 3 D point cloud in order to test the flight parameters in the field, Make adjustments and then fly the unit. It was also great to get a tour of the work Jason Mack and Nuveen Natural Capital (Nuveen, a TIAA company) are performing on the property. Their Forest management produces wood products, creates better fire resiliency with an eye on climate adaptation and forest health. Great Job! Glad that DARS gets to play a role in this great work effort! #forestproud #forest #forestry #forests #Forestmanagement

The team at DARS LLC, (Data Analytics & Remote Sensing) are quickly getting recognized for their expertise in using UAS acquired imagery to create value added products for the forest industry. They have perfected their methodologies for regen surveys, depletion mapping and post PCT assessments. If you are looking for these services in 2025, especially in Western Washington and/or Western Oregon, they are scheduling out their 2025 field season. You can reach them here (Michael Roush /Jacob Callahan /DARS ). I am reposting an example of their work. #forest #forestry #forestmanagement #trees #tree

Regen Surveys with UAS Technology. Once again working with the team from DARS (Michael Roush & Jacob Callahan). This time they flew a 5 year old plantation (primarily Douglas-fir) in Western Washington. First they generated an Orthomosaic. They then analyzed the imagery with a commercially available AI, cloud based service (trees identified with red dots). Then they analyzed the same imagery with USFS LIDAR Fusion tool (trees identified with blue dots). Field reconnaissance followed to investigate the differences. It appears that the USFS LIDAR Fusion tool was more accurate. Or I should say accurate in different ways. The commercial AI analysis had some trouble identifying trees in the shadows, while the USFS LIDAR Fusion tool, would sometimes count stumps as trees. Overall both analysis were very impressive. Next step is for the team at DARS to perform a fishnet and heat map analysis to classify trees/per acre across the property. Stay tuned for a future post. Big Kudo to the team at DARS. #forestry #forestmanagement #forests #trees #arboriculture #drone #drones #UAS

A teaser from the DARS team's recent work in Northeast Oregon. Using drone imagery flown by Michael Roush. The first image is a 3D model and the second is a DSM both created from standard RGB imagery. Next step will be to perform a tree segmentation analysis that should result in tree density and heights. #trees #tree #forestry #forest #forestmanagement #drone #dataanalysis #remotesensing

DARS has made some serious advances in research and development of future services to the Forestry sector. This past week and weekend we’ve been flying our new UAS (Mavic 3 Enterprise) in NE Oregon, to gather imagery in mixed conifer/ponderosa pine dominated forests. If you want to see where we are heading, check out this publication. https://lnkd.in/guvuHbw7 Oregon State University Forestry extension foresters, John Punches and Jacob Putney, CF provided us access to the “Obie” research forest near Elgin, OR https://lnkd.in/gtMXcjZ7 And Jacob Putney, CF also introduced us to John and Cheryl Peel, forest landowners near Wallowa, Oregon. Who invited us to fly their property to provide a demonstration for the Northeast Oregon Small Woodland Association. We met a lot of enthusiastic forest landowners as well as numerous agency staff from Oregon Department of Forestry Wallowa Resources Oregon State University Forestry Extension.
